Bayer 04 has been playing in the top flight of German soccer without interruption since its promotion to the Bundesliga in 1978/79. In the 2023/24 season, the Werkself won the historic first championship in the club's history and became the first Bundesliga team ever to do so without losing in a Bundesliga season.

2025/26 season review, part I: Upheaval, change, euphoria
Following the final match of the 2025/26 season, the prevailing feeling was naturally one of disappointment after missing out on qualification for the Champions League. The Werkself finished the Bundesliga in sixth place, meaning they'll start the 2026/27 campaign in the Europa League. "But to talk negatively about everything now because of that would be wrong," stressed captain Robert Andrich following the final game, knowing that the past year at Bayer 04 was marked, more than almost any other, by the start of a new era and the courage to change – and in particular, the belief in a positive direction. Werkself review #B04HSV: ‘Small details that make the difference at this level’
After the final whistle in the home match against Hamburger SV, it showed once again that the Bayer 04 community sticks together. The team thanked the fans for their great support in a season with highs and lows and a sixth-place finish in the Bundesliga. The Black and Reds will compete in the UEFA Europa League next season. Werkself finish Bundesliga in sixth place after 1-1 draw with Hamburg
Bayer 04 could only manage a 1-1 draw at home to Hamburg in the final game of the 2025/26 Bundesliga season as they finish in sixth place and qualify for the UEFA Europa League. Patrik Schick missed a first-half penalty before Fabio Vieira put the visitors ahead on the hour. Jarell Quansah’s deflected header in the 79th minute earned a point to finish the campaign.

Matchday news #B04HSV: Finally Red in last chance for Champions League qualification
Bayer 04 host Hamburg at the BayArena for the first time since September 2017 on the final day of the 2025/26 Bundesliga season on Saturday (15:30 CEST). HSV are safe in their first campaign back in the top flight after back-to-back wins, but Leverkusen are unbeaten in their last 19 games against promoted teams as they go for the victory they need to have a chance to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. Our next opponents: HSV heading to Leverkusen with no pressure
Hamburger SV already secured another season of Bundesliga football on Matchday 32. Following a brief dip in form in the spring, it means they've comfortably achieved their target for the season.
