Bayer 04 has been playing in the top flight of German soccer without interruption since its promotion to the Bundesliga in 1978/79. In the 2023/24 season, the Werkself won the historic first championship in the club's history and became the first Bundesliga team ever to do so without losing in a Bundesliga season.

Our next opponents: HSV heading to Leverkusen with no pressure
Hamburger SV already secured another season of Bundesliga football on Matchday 32. Following a brief dip in form in the spring, it means they've comfortably achieved their target for the season. HSV now round off their campaign with a trip to the BayArena on Saturday 16 May (kick-off: 15:30 CEST on Werkself Radio), where two of the club’s key players may well be making their final appearance for their side. Werkself Review #VfBB04: Determined to end on a high at home
In the next head-to-head clash for the Champions League places at VfB Stuttgart, Bayer 04 failed to follow up their impressive 4-1 win at home to RB Leipzig from the week before. After Aleix Garcia gave the Werkself the lead with their fastest goal of the season, the Swabians turned the game around and won 3-1, knocking Leverkusen down into sixth place. It leaves them needing a win at home to Hamburger SV and other results to go their way on the final day of the 2025/26 campaign in order to reclaim fourth spot. Werkself slip to sixth after 3-1 defeat in Stuttgart showdown
Down to fifth from fourth place despite taking an early lead: in the head-to-head for a Champions League spot, Bayer 04 were 1-0 up at VfB Stuttgart with just a minute played thanks to an Aleix Garcia strike, but ultimately lost 3-1 (2-1) to the more determined hosts. It meant the Swabians leapfrogged the Werkself in the Bundesliga table on the penultimate matchday.

Today sees Bayer 04 go head-to-head with their next direct rivals in the race for Champions League qualification (kick-off 15:30 CEST). Opponents Stuttgart are currently fifth in the table, level on points with the Werkself but one place below them due to a three-goal inferior goal difference.
