Bayer 04 have been in Germany's top flight continuously since promotion to the Bundesliga in 1978/79. The Werkself have finished runners-up five times at the end of the season. With one exception in the 2016/ 17 season (twelfth place), the Black and Reds have always finished in a European spot at the end of a Bundesliga campaign since the 2010s.

There's late, and then there's Leverkusen late: once again, Bayer 04 averted a first defeat of the season at the death in Saturday evening's match against VfB Stuttgart, and have now gained nine points through goals fromthe 90th minute onwards this season - a new Bundesliga record. 2-2 against Stuttgart – Werkself rescue run with late leveller

The last-minute madness continues: Bayer 04 secured a 2-2 draw against VfB Stuttgart on Bundesliga matchday 31. Chris Führich and Deniz Undav (57') put the visitors 2-0 up after a goalless first half. The team under head coach Xabi Alonso fought back with another energetic performance: Amine Adli (62’) pulled a goal back and, in the last move of the game, Robert Andrich levelled to make it 2-2 (90+7'). The Werkself remain unbeaten in 46 games across all competitions.
