UEFA Champions League
Since its first participation in 1997, the Werkself has been regularly represented in Europe's top club competition. In the 2025/26 season Bayer 04 will be playing in the "premier class" for the fourteenth time in total. Its greatest success was reaching the 2002 final against Real Madrid in Glasgow.

Werkself review #ARSB04: ‘Gain important experience from these twelve games’
Hopes were high but disappointment was evident at the end of the second leg of the Round of 16 of UEFA Champions League 2025/26 with the Werkself losing 2-0 to clinical hosts Arsenal after a 1-1 draw in the first leg. Although this marks the end of the journey in the UCL this term the realisation remains that Bayer 04 are "not as far away as it might feel right now", as head coach Kasper Hjulmand said after the game. Werkself knocked out after 2-0 defeat in second leg at Arsenal
Bayer 04 lost 2-0 at Arsenal FC in the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg. Eberechi Eze (36') and Declan Rice (63') scored the goals for the Gunners. Despite a big effort – especially in the second half – the Werkself are out of the competition following the 1-1 draw in the first leg.

Matchday News #ARSB04: Hoping for historic achievement with strong support
Bayer 04 have the chance to reach the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League for the third time ever and the first in 14 years at Arsenal on Tuesday night (kick-off 21:00 CEST/20:00 local time). To do that, the Werkself not only require a strong performance like in the first leg, but also full concentration until the very last minute, as the Premier League leaders like to score late - as they did at the BayArena last week. Opponents update – ‘Confident we'll get the job done’
In their last two matches, they’ve done exactly what 'Laterkusen' did in the 2023/24 double-winning season: late on, but not too late, the Gunners scored crucial goals – first in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 at Bayer 04, then last weekend in the Premier League against Everton. Werkself review #B04ARS: ‘Played really well against a top opponent’
In the 1-1 draw against FC Arsenal, the Werkself had one of the favourites for the Champions League title on the brink of defeat thanks to a combative and disciplined team performance, but conceded an equaliser late on. Nevertheless, the players and media were extremely positive about the Bayer 04 performance after the game and coach Kasper Hjulmand also drew "a lot of hope" for the second leg in London from his team's display.
