Since its first participation in 1997, the Werkself has been regularly represented in Europe's top club competition. In the 2025/26 season Bayer 04 will be playing in the "premier class" for the fourteenth time in total. Its greatest success was reaching the 2002 final against Real Madrid in Glasgow.

Kasper Hjulmand had announced in advance that his side intended to be active and force phases of possession. Some saw the Bayer 04 head coach's words as a touch audacious.
