"We've had a very good week with a lot of anticipation for this next assignment," highlighted Kasper Hjulmand at his press conference on Friday. After four wins from the last five league matches, including victories in Dortmund and Cologne as well as the 4-1 success at home to RB Leipzig last time out, the Dane said: "Obviously the mood is positive and the confidence is there. We want to take the push from the last game to Stuttgart. But it starts from zero again on Saturday."
Across the last five matchdays, Bayer 04 have gained seven points on VfB and four on TSG Hoffenheim in the table, with all three teams now tied on the same number. "It's didn't look as positive a few weeks ago, but we've had good results," added Hjulmand. "That's put us in a good position and now we want to capitalise on it."
Thursday's Europa League results confirmed that the Bundesliga will only have four places in the UEFA Champions League next season. Ahead of this showdown between fourth-placed Leverkusen and fifth-placed Stuttgart, Hjulmand said: "We need to play with concentration and mental strength. They've had a very good season, picked up a lot of points and are also in the cup final. They press heavily man-to-man, we know that. We're ready for the challenge."
On the personnel front, Hjulmand was keeping his cards close to his chest on the eve of the game, only confirming that Lucas Vázquez could return to the squad.
When asked about the often impressive displays against top teams in recent months - such as Arsenal, Bayern, Dortmund and Leipzig - the 54-year-old explained: "We have quite good players too. (laughs) It can help us when our opponents also try to play football and attack a lot. It obviously gives the match a different feel. Generally, Stuttgart are also an attack-minded team. It's certainly going to be another interesting and eventful match!"
The Werkself will be cheered on by around 4,000 fans at the MHP Arena.
