Bayer 04 has reached the final of the national cup competition in Berlin's Olympic Stadium five times. In 1993, the Werkself won the title with a 1:0 victory against the amateurs of Hertha BSC. In the 2023/24 season, the Werkself lifted the DFB Cup for a second time in the club's history with a 1-0 win against 1. FC Kaiserslautern.

2025/26 season review, part I: Upheaval, change, euphoria
Following the final match of the 2025/26 season, the prevailing feeling was naturally one of disappointment after missing out on qualification for the Champions League. The Werkself finished the Bundesliga in sixth place, meaning they'll start the 2026/27 campaign in the Europa League. "But to talk negatively about everything now because of that would be wrong," stressed captain Robert Andrich following the final game, knowing that the past year at Bayer 04 was marked, more than almost any other, by the start of a new era and the courage to change – and in particular, the belief in a positive direction. Werkself review #B04FCB: In the game 'for a long time' thanks to 'great keeper'
In the 2-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in the DFB Pokal semi-final, the Werkself failed to score a goal for the first time in over eleven years in this competition. A significant improvement in performance after the break was not enough to secure a second appearance in the final in three years. And this despite the fact an impressive display by Mark Flekken, among others, kept Bayer 04 in the game with the shot stopper making eight saves. Battling Bayer 04 exit DFB Pokal after 2-0 defeat to FC Bayern
Bayer 04 narrowly missed out on a second DFB Pokal final appearance in three years. Mark Flekken saved several shots from the visitors in the early stages of the semi-final against Bayern Munich, but was beaten by Harry Kane's opening goal on 21 minutes. The Black and Reds were much more on the front foot in the second half but missed the chance to level through Nathan Tella (52') and Patrik Schick (70'). Instead, Luis Diaz sealed the win in stoppage time with the second FC Bayern second goal (90+3’).

Bayer 04 fans are only too happy to remember the last DFB Pokal tie against Bayern Munich: Back then, a goal from Nathan Tella secured the Werkself a place in the quarter-finals. While Leverkusen are looking to repeat that feat and reach the final for the second time in three years, FCB are aiming for their first appearance in the final since 2020.
