Bayer 04 has reached the final of the national cup competition in Berlin's Olympic Stadium five times. In 1993, the Werkself won the title with a 1:0 victory against the amateurs of Hertha BSC. In the 2023/24 season, the Werkself lifted the DFB Cup for a second time in the club's history with a 1-0 win against 1. FC Kaiserslautern.

In the 2-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in the DFB Pokal semi-final, the Werkself failed to score a goal for the first time in over eleven years in this competition. A significant improvement in performance after the break was not enough to secure a second appearance in the final in three years. And this despite the fact an impressive display by Mark Flekken, among others, kept Bayer 04 in the game with the shot stopper making eight saves. He subsequently received praise from the coach and media. The Dutchman himself is looking ahead and wants to take the positives from the second half: "Then we'll be able to achieve a lot." The Werkself review.
