Since promotion to the Bundesliga in 1978/79, Bayer 04 have remained in Germany's top flight. The Werkself have ended the season in second place five times. With the one exception of 2016/17 (12th position), the Black and Reds finished in the top five in the 2010s.

Schick chests Werkself to 2-1 win at Union Berlin
Bayer 04 became the first team to beat Union Berlin at the Stadion an der Alten Försterei this season thanks to a 2-1 win on Bundesliga Matchday 12. Jeremie Frimpong put the Werkself ahead after just two minutes before Wooyeong Jeong levelled for the hosts after half an hour. Patrik Schick then chested Leverkusen to victory with a new club record in the second half.

Our next opponents: The Irons are difficult to break down at the back
After a very good start to the season, Union Berlin are currently going through a lean period in the Bundesliga. Alonso ahead of #B04SGE: 'Intense match against strong team'
