Since promotion to the Bundesliga in 1978/79, Bayer 04 have remained in Germany's top flight. The Werkself have ended the season in second place five times. With the one exception of 2016/17 (12th position), the Black and Reds finished in the top five in the 2010s.

Werkself Review #BVBB04: Leverkusen land knockout blow
Bayer 04 made an impressive statement in the battle for Champions League places with the 1-0 win at Borussia Dortmund. The Werkself are the only team besides FC Bayern who have defeated BVB in domestic competitions this season - and have done so twice. As such, there was relief and joy aplenty after the victory, which should provide the Black-and-Reds with a vital boost for the run-in. Andrich goal earns important 1-0 win at BVB
Bayer 04 claimed a big win in the battle for Champions League qualification on Matchday 29, beating second-placed Borussia Dortmund 1-0. Robert Andrich scored the only goal of the game with a well-placed strike shortly before half-time. Leverkusen passionately defended their lead after that to inflict only a third league defeat of the season on BVB.

Werkself review #B04VfB: Honest words and looking ahead
It was a disappointing Saturday night. The Werkself lost 4-1 to VfB Stuttgart to start the new year on Bundesliga matchday 16 in 2025/26, a result that left both players and fans disappointed. Werkself beaten 4-1 by Stuttgart at start of the year
The Werkself began 2026 with defeat, losing 4-1 at home to VfB Stuttgart on Matchday 16 of the 2025/26 Bundesliga. Jamie Leweling opened the scoring early, with Maximilian Mittelstädt making it 2-0 from a penalty before Leweling again and Deniz Undav increased the lead to 4-0 just before half-time. Alejandro Grimaldo's penalty reduced the deficit midway through the second period.
