Bayer 04 have only won this European club competition onc in the 1987/88 season, back then as the UEFA Cup. In the final against Espanyol, the first leg ended in a 3-0 defeat but the team under head coach Erich Ribbeck levelled the scores in the second leg and went on to lift the trophy after winning on penalties.

2-2 against Roma - Werkself in Europa League final!
The Werkself have done it! After the 2-0 win in the semi-final first leg at AS Roma, a spectacular 2-2 draw in the second leg was enough to progress to the final of the UEFA Europa League. The Italians led through two penalties, but an own goal and a Josip Stanisic strike in the seventh minute of stoppage time raised the roof of the BayArena - and handed Bayer 04 their ticket for the final against Atalanta on 22 May in Dublin.
