UEFA europa League
Bayer 04 have only won this European club competition onc in the 1987/88 season, back then as the UEFA Cup. In the final against Espanyol, the first leg ended in a 3-0 defeat but the team under head coach Erich Ribbeck levelled the scores in the second leg and went on to lift the trophy after winning on penalties. In 2023/24, the Werkself reached the final of the UEFA Europa League, but lost 3-0 to Atalanta Bergamo.

Review of the double-winning season! Part two: Everlasting success
The team under coach Xabi Alonso unwaveringly continued their run in the New Year. They were top at the winter break, beat Bayern Munich and continued to break away from the record champions. Never giving up, scoring an incredible number of crucial goals in added time and going from one win to the next. The second half of this magical 2023/24 season includes a breathtaking number of highlights. There was already huge anticipation for the 2023/24 season before it even began. Many factors suggested a successful campaign: the coach, the shrewd transfers, the noticeably close connection between the team and the fans, the will to achieve great things together. "Us. For our dream." - four words that were an expression of immense confidence. And which were lived by the club, the team and the fans from the very start, with a lot of heart and passion, and as a given. We take a look back at what was a historic season. It wasn't to be: after a highly emotional journey in the UEFA Europa League, Bayer 04 lost 3-0 to Atalanta in the final, also ending the run of 51 competitive games without defeat. Everything was set up for a historic day for the Black-and-Reds: 12,000 fans supported the Werkself in Dublin, getting into the spirit long before kick-off and also creating a brilliant atmosphere in the stadium. 3-0 defeat - Werkself downed by Atalanta in the Europa League final
The Werkself have lost 3-0 to Atalanta in the UEFA Europa League final. There was no way through for Bayer 04 against a very vigilant Italian defence. Ademola Lookman scored the goals for the Bergamo side in the 12th, 26th and 75th minutes. It was the first defeat for the Black & Reds this season following a run of 51 unbeaten competitive matches.

Alonso ahead of #B04ASR: “Expecting a top spectacle with a great atmosphere”
Bayer 04 have the final of the UEFA Europa League firmly in their sights as they prepare to host Roma at a sold-out BayArena for the semi-final second leg on Thursday (kick-off: 9pm CEST). The Werkself have a 2-0 lead from last week’s first leg in Rome and are well placed to reach a first European final in over 20 years. Ahead of the return fixture, head coach Xabi Alonso and defender Edmond Tapsoba spoke at the club’s press conference on Wednesday and gave a warning about a motivated opponent.
