Arsenal have only been eliminated in three of the 20 knockout rounds in which they've avoided defeat away from home in the first leg. Although the last time that happened, against Sporting CP in the round of 16 in 2022/23, current coach Mikel Arteta was in the dugout. Leverkusen can also take encouragement from the fact that the Werkself have fared well on their recent visits to England, winning two of their last three UCL away games against English clubs.
That includes the 2-0 success over Manchester City on Matchday 5 of the league phase, when Alejandro Grimaldo, normally a creator, netted the opening goal. The Spaniard has set up the second-most attempts to date in this season's competition (26) and also provided the assist for Bayer 04's goal in the first leg against the Gunners. After serving a one-match ban in the Bundesliga at the weekend, Grimaldo should be fresh to start on the left in North London.
Arteta's men struggled for a long time against Everton on Saturday but demonstrated their perserverence again, breaking the deadlock in the 89th minute before striking again in stoppage time. In the first leg at the BayArena, substitute Kai Havertz scored the late equaliser and, as well as their belief in themselves, highlighted another of Arsenal's strengths: the quality from the bench. Havertz's strike was the Gunners' seventh goal scored by a substitute - the most in the current Champions League season. Plus, two important players could return to the North Londoners' already strong squad, as our extensive opponents update reveals.

Almost 3,000 Bayer 04 fans have made the trip to the English capital to support the team in their mission to reach the quarter-finals. No further tickets are available.
Experienced Dutch referee Danny Makkelie will take charge of his fifth Leverkusen fixture in European competition. The last success in the Champions League under the 43-year-old was the 4-1 win over BATE Borisov in September 2015, which featured a brace from Hakan Calhanoglu. Makkelie will be assisted on the sidelines in London by his compatriots Hessel Steegstra and Jan de Vries, while Dennis Higler has been appointed the video assistant.

After eight years in the youth set-up at Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Benjamin Adam is leaving the club. The 35-year-old, who most recently coached the Leverkusen U17s, will take charge of the Hansa Rostock U19 team next season.

A fresh look for the BayArena: The Bayer 04 stadium will have new seating in the form of folding seats for the 2026/27 campaign that will ensure significantly improved seating comfort and simplified movement within the rows of seats. As part of routine replacement after 17 years, fans of the Werkself were able to purchase the existing seats, used to witness the first German league title in the club's history. In addition, a large proportion of the seats will be donated to charitable projects, primarily in the local region. Bayer 04 fans can look forward to new, functional folding seats for the season opener at the beginning of August - still in the club colours of black and red, of course. A glimpse at the BayArena during the refurbishment.
