The Werkself have regularly played in Europe's premier club competition since first taking part in 1997. In 2016/17 Bayer 04 competed in the Champions League for the eleventh time overall and for the fifth time in the past six years. The biggest achievement was reaching the 2002 final against Real Madrid in Glasgow.
