UEFA Champions League

The Werkself have regularly played in Europe's premier club competition since first taking part in 1997. In 2016/17 Bayer 04 competed in the Champions League for the eleventh time overall and for the fifth time in the past six years. The biggest achievement was reaching the 2002 final against Real Madrid in Glasgow.

End of the road for impressive Werkself

The Werkself have been knocked out of the Champions League. A very decent performance on Wednesday night in the Round of 16 second leg was not enough to turn round the 4-2 defeat against Atlético Madrid three weeks ago. Bayer 04 had the upper hand on the Spaniards, particularly in the second half, but were unable to score.

Korkut: 'Use every minute tomorrow'

Tyfun Korkut knows what it's like to win at the Calderon stadium. In 2003, when he was a playmaker for the Real Sociedad alongside Xabi Alonzo and Javi de Pedro in midfield, he put his team ahead straight after the restart in a 2-1 victory at the Atletico Madrid cauldron. "I know exactly what the atmosphere's like," said the 42-year-old at the press conference ahead of his return – this time as coach: "And my players also know what to expect tomorrow."
