UEFA europa League
In the 1987/88 season, Bayer 04 won the European club competition for the only time to date, at that time still under the name UEFA Cup. The first leg of the final was lost 3-0 to Espanyol Barcelona, but head coach Erich Ribbeck's team equaled the total in the second leg - and won the trophy after a penalty shootout. After finishing third in Group B of the UEFA Champions League, the Werkself will continue to play in the European Cup and play on in the play-offs of the knockout round of the UEFA Europa League.

Rolfes expects lion’s den in home game against AS Roma
The countdown is running. The Werkself successfully completed their final pre-match training session on Wednesday ahead of the first European semi-final home game in over 20 years. At the last session before the semi-final second leg against AS Roma tomorrow, Thursday 18 May (kick-off: 21.00 CEST ), sporting managing director Simon Rolfes talked about the lessons from the 1-0 defeat in Rome and the expected “special atmosphere” at the BayArena.

The team under coach José Mourinho drew 0-0 at Bologna but were able to make up one position in the table and they are now in sixth place. Mourinho made plenty of changes for the game in Bologna with many of his regular starters earning a break.
