Captain Friederike Repohl and Co. made a gentle start. The first session of the summer ended after just less than an hour on the pitch. Vanessa Fudalla, who has joined Leverkusen from RB Leipzig , and Claudia Wenger (SKN St. Pölten) joined their new teammates on the pitch. In addition to the keepers Louisa Remien and full-back Paula Schwartze, who are part of the Bundesliga squad in training, the session also included U20 players Franziska Theuss, Jolina Heltemes, Jana Lindner and Sana Coskun.
Two of the four new signings missed the opening session – for different reasons. Carlotta Wamser (from Eintracht Frankfurt) is currently with the Germany squad preparing for the Euros finals in Switzerland (2 to 27 July). Valentina Mädl, who missed her last games at SKN St. Pölten due to injury, is still suffering from an Achilles problem and is only expected to return to full training with her new club at the start of July.

Cornelia Kramer (with Denmark preparing for the Euros), Charlotte Voll (ankle), Caroline Kehrer (knee), Shen Menglu (torn cruciate) and Katharina Piljic (slight Achilles problem) were also absent from the training group and the same applies to youth players Amy Wrigge (knee) and Kirkeliis Lillemets (knee).
The Werkself have the first friendly of the preseason on Friday, 4 July against league rivals TSG Hoffenheim in Westerburg. Two more friendlies against the two Netherlands teams PEC Zwolle (12 July) and Ajax (18 July) are followed by another break from 20 July to 3 August. The Leverkusen Women then have a training camp in Rieden in Bavaria from 17 to 24 August. The Black and Reds start the new campaign in the Google Pixel Women's Bundesliga on Saturday, 6 September (17:45 CEST) with the official opening fixture away to champions of Germany Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.

Bayer 04 put in a brilliant performance to beat RB Leipzig 4-1 on Bundesliga matchday 32 and are now fourth in a Champions League spot. The Black and Reds took control of the game right from the start and, with 75 per cent possession at one stage, took a 2-0 lead into the break through Patrik Schick (25’) and Nathan Tella (45+1’). The visitors initially tried to do more after the break, but the Werkself remained determined and Schick scored his second goal to increase the lead to 3-0 (76'). The Red Bulls pulled a goal back through Christoph Baumgartner (80'), but the disciplined Leverkusen side were not rattled - and certainly not Schick: The Czechia international crowned a brilliant display with his third goal shortly before the final whistle to make the final score 4-1.

In the previous game against RB Leipzig in December last year, the Werkself turned came from behind to win 3-1 and further improved Leverkusen's already strong record against the Red Bulls. Montrell Culbreath stood out with his first goal on his debut for the Black and Reds. While the 18-year-old would certainly like to score a second goal against Leipzig on Saturday night, the attack-minded visitors come to the BayArena in confident mood after five Bundesliga victories in a row. The Nordkurve12 supporters group knows the Werkself will therefore once again be reliant on the vociferous support of the fans, and has once again called for the ‘Finally Red’ campaign in the run-in.
