Leverkusen were in complete control for a good half an hour at the Poznan Stadium when Patrik Schick stepped up to take a penalty following a Poznan handball in their own penalty area and he scored to put his side ahead (29’). Just a few minutes later, Malik Tillman made it 2–0 from close range (32'). And the third goal followed before half-time: after Schick was fouled in the penalty area from a corner, the Czech confidently converted the second spot kick (41'). The second half was a much quieter affair, with the final word ultimately going to the impressive Ibrahim Maza as he rounded off proceedings with his goal to make it 4–0 shortly before full time (89').
The analysis from head coach Carles Martínez: “Of course, I’m very pleased. The plan we’d discussed beforehand worked out. I really liked the energy.” When asked about the winning streak in the last four matches, the Spaniard explained: “Positive results are always the outcome of our daily work. This run can help us and foster a certain winning mentality.”

Speaking afterwards to Werkself TV, Tillman said: “It just feels really good today. Everyone’s performance was top-class. From start to finish, we showed who was determined to win this match. A successful trip and the next step.” Schick, who scored twice, said for his part: “In my opinion, the key today was the intensity we showed right from the start. That allowed us to create plenty of chances. The win was, of course, well deserved. Winning four games in a row feels really good. Now the focus is on Sunday’s important match against Freiburg.”
“Leverkusen hold their own in the cauldron of Poznan,” read the headline in the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger. “Bayer rotate line-up to secure another victory in Poznan,” wrote the Rheinische Post, referring to the six changes to the starting XI for a Werkself side that had “sealed the result before half-time”. Bild Zeitung noted, with regard to Schick – who has now scored eight goals in eight matches across all competitions – that the Czech “demonstrates his outstanding form even as a substitute. [...] Schick immediately goes in search of goals.” The kicker summary read as follows: “Bayer 04 clear the Poznan hurdle with ease. Against the Polish champions, the Werkself had the game wrapped up before half-time and went on to score a well-deserved fourth goal in the closing stages. Man of the match is, of course, Schick, who came on as a substitute.”
There was some encouraging news regarding the squad even before kick-off: Aleix Garcia made his 100th appearance for Bayer 04, Nathan Tella was in the starting line-up for a competitive match for the first time since early May, and goalscorer Ibrahim Maza, along with several of his team-mates, were making their debuts in the Europa League. Malik Tillman scored his first goal in a major European competition with his strike to make it 2–0.

The match stats speak for themselves. Thanks to over 61 per cent possession, a better completed challenge rate and a pass completion rate of over 91 per cent – significantly higher than that of the Polish champions – the Werkself ended up with a remarkable 22 shots on goal (Lech Poznan: 10). Four of those found the back of the net. There were also positives at the back: The Black and Reds have kept a clean sheet in their first two Europa League group matches for the first time since 2012/13.
The Werkself Bundesliga campaign continues with a home game against SC Freiburg. Kick-off at the BayArena on Sunday, 18 October, at 15:30 CEST. The Black and Reds then continue their Europa League campaign in Greece, where they face OFI Crete on Thursday 22 October (kick-off: 18:45 CEST).

Bayer 04 remain unbeaten in the 2026/27 UEFA Europa League. After winning the opener against NK Celje, the Werkself followed that up on Thursday night with a 4–0 win away at the Polish champions Lech Poznan. Patrik Schick, who came on as a substitute early in the game, scored twice from the penalty spot, and Malik Tillman also found the back of the net before half-time. The second half was a more subdued affair, with Ibrahim Maza scoring late on to seal the final 4-0 scoreline.
