Grimaldo
Alejandro Grimaldo moved from Benfica to Bayer 04 on a free transfer in the summer of 2023. The Spanish left-back played for the Portuguese top club from 2016, in Leverkusen he signed a contract to 2027. "Alejandro Grimaldo is an agile, very skilful full-back, tactically very adept. He is capable of scoring goals and has a lot of experience and class," said Bayer 04 managing director sport Simon Rolfes about the new signing on sealing the deal.

Farewell to a star player: Grimaldo leaves Bayer 04 for Atlético Madrid
Spain international Alejandro Grimaldo is leaving Bayer 04 Leverkusen and, having won three trophies in three years, is moving to top European side Atlético Madrid. The Leverkusen-based club and the ‘Colchoneros’ have agreed on a transfer for the prolific full-back, who has never played for one of Spain’s top-flight clubs in his professional career to date.

Alejandro Grimaldo netted nine goals from direct free-kicks – a stand-alone record in Europe’s top five leagues. Having moved from Lisbon to Leverkusen for the 2023/24 season, the left-back became a role model and a leader on the pitch under the Bayer Cross. At Bayer 04, he won the double and became a fan favourite. Ahead of the 2026/27 season, the number 20 is leaving the Werkself to join Spanish club Atlético Madrid in La Liga.
