Women: Carolin Simon appointed as new captain

Carolin Simon is the new captain of the Bayer 04 women’s team. The full-back, who joined from Bayern Munich in the summer, will take over the captain’s armband for the 2026/27 season. Simon returned to Leverkusen in the summer after ten years away. The 33-year-old succeeds goalkeeper Friederike Repohl, who retired at the end of last season.

“It means the world to me to lead the team as captain,” said Simon: “I’ve felt the trust and appreciation of the squad and the coaching staff from day one. I will do everything I can to live up to my new role and will give my all for the whole club, both on and off the pitch.”

As well as Simon, the team committee includes Melissa Friedrich, Sofie Zdebel and Cornelia Kramer; this trio were already part of the group last year. New additions, alongside Simon – who wore the captain’s armband in the pre-season friendlies – include Germany international Carlotta Wamser.

Carolin Simon schwört das Team ein

Simon previously played for Bayer 04 from 2013 to 2016. Most recently, the former international won the German league title five times with FC Bayern, before rejoining the Werkself. On her return in April, she emphasised her desire to bring her experience to the team and to support the younger players with advice and practical help. Now, on Sunday (16:00 CEST) in the first match of the season against RB Leipzig, Simon will officially take on the central leadership role within the team for the first time.

“Caro is a true leader; she brings a wealth of experience at the very highest level and has taken on responsibility both on and off the pitch from her very first day with us. That is exactly what we want from our players,” said coach Roberto Pätzold: “She is already familiar with Bayer 04 from her previous time here and has earned a lot of honours in recent years. We are delighted she will not only strengthen our squad with her outstanding footballing ability, but will also lead the team as captain.”
