“I’m looking forward to this match and the next two home games that follow. Our performances at home so far this season have been very good. I think the fans are just as excited. Together with them, we want to achieve our goal and progress to the next round against Nürnberg,” said Carles Martínez at the pre-match press conference on Tuesday afternoon.
FC Nürnberg are currently second in Bundesliga 2 and are managed by Mirsolav Klose. Now in their third season under the former top striker, FCN are among the promotion contenders in the second tier. Speaking about Klose, Martínez said: “I’ve never met him before, so I’m looking forward to tomorrow. He had a brilliant career as a player and is now doing a good job as a manager too. His team are playing well, have tremendous quality in attack and are in good form.”
In response to a question about Ibrahim Maza, who was voted into the top ten in the ‘Men’s Young Talent of the Year’ category at the Ballon d’Or awards in London on Monday night, the head coach said: “He is an outstanding player and a good person. He never plays selfishly; he is a true team player. We rate him very highly. It’s important that he continues to work hard, while at the same time continuing to enjoy the game. And we will, of course, continue to help him get the very best out of himself.”
As for the starting line-up for tomorrow’s DFB Pokal tie, Martínez revealed that Janis Blaswich will be in goal. When asked about Montrell Culbreath, the Spaniard said: “If everything goes as normal, he’ll be in the squad and we’ll also try, if possible, to give him a few minutes’ playing time. He trains incredibly hard, is always beaming and brings a great attitude to training. He’s a good lad with loads of energy. He’ll be able to help us.”
Martínez also provided another update on Loïc Badé: “He’s feeling better and he’s here too. But of course he won’t be playing tomorrow.”
Around 29,200 fans are expected at the BayArena, 3,000 of them supporting FC Nürnberg.

Bayer 04 will have to manage without forward Moussa Diaby for their upcoming matches. The 27-year-old Frenchman sustained a thigh injury in the 3-0 defeat against TSG Hoffenheim yesterday afternoon, Sunday 25 October. Diaby is expected to be available again after the international break in November.

It has been a long time since feeling what it’s like to come away empty-handed. The last – and so far only – defeat of the season, in Elversberg, was two months ago. Since then, Bayer 04 have followed that up with seven wins and a draw. Now it has happened again away to TSG Hoffenheim. As the match progressed, the Werkself grew in confidence and “could even have scored the opening goal”, as Robert Andrich said after the game. In the end, it was the side from Sinsheim who sealed a 3–0 victory after “hectic closing stages” (kicker). The Werkself review.
