"Ibo's nomination shows just how high a standard our players and our team are performing at,” Simon Rolfes, Bayer 04’s managing director sport, said in the run-up to the announcement. Maza joined Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2025 from Hertha Berlin. Last season, he made 44 appearances for the Werkself across all competitions, scoring five goals and providing seven assists.

Other nominees included Pau Cubarsi (Barcelona), Yan Diomande (Real Madrid/formerly RB Leipzig) and Warren Zaïre-Emery (Paris Saint-Germain). Another player who, alongside Maza, featured on the ten-man shortlist was long-serving Leverkusen player Kerim Alajbegovic, who had played for Bayer 04 until 2025.
