Alonso’s excitement ahead of such a huge fixture was evident from the start. “The DFB Pokal is a special competition. We have special memories of last year. Tomorrow’s tie is a top game for both sides. It’s almost like a final and the biggest challenge in the cup. We’ll approach it positively and fight for our chance.”
Speaking of the opposition, Alonso said of his former club: “We know how tough it is to play in Munich. They’re definitely always favourites at home. They’re showing that right now in every competition. They play at high speed, with lots of pressing and also good counter-pressing.” According to the Spaniard, it means his team will need a “complete performance”, adding, “Obviously we’ll need to be ready to defend deeper sometimes. That’s normal against such an opponent. But not always. We definitely want to press and play with the ball.”
Alonso will have two more players at his disposal in Munich, with forward Martin Terrier and defender Jeanuel Belocian both fit again and ready to play. “It’s really important for us to have more energy as the game wears on and to have more possibilities to be decisive. We’re pleased both are back,” he stated.
The 43-year-old also had words of praise for Patrik Schick following his run of six goals in the last four games. “He’s not just done well in terms of his goals lately but also done a lot of other things right, sometimes against tough defenders. He’s in top form now. We’ll need that again tomorrow,” Alonso confirmed.
Some 5,000 Leverkusen fans will be inside the Allianz Arena to support the DFB Pokal holders as they look to reach the quarter-finals.

Today sees Bayer 04 go head-to-head with their next direct rivals in the race for Champions League qualification (kick-off 15:30 CEST). Opponents Stuttgart are currently fifth in the table, level on points with the Werkself but one place below them due to a three-goal inferior goal difference. The Black and Reds' record at Bad Cannstatt tells a clearer story: they've not lost at VfB for over 16 years. One important factor in securing what would be three crucial points away from home is Leverkusen's strength on the counter-attack. Whilst Stuttgart are also extremely dangerous going forward, they will be without their captain. Today’s matchday news.

It's a thrilling situation: as the season draws to a close, Stuttgart and Bayer 04 are heading into the home stretch almost neck and neck. After 32 games, with 17 wins, seven draws and eight defeats each, both teams are on 58 points. Even in terms of goals scored, VfB and the Werkself are level on 66. The Black and Reds have conceded just three fewer goals (43) than their rivals (46), which is why they sit one place behind fourth-placed Leverkusen. This Saturday, 9 May (kick-off: 15.30 CEST), the two teams go head to head at the MHP Arena in Stuttgart. The lowdown on our next opponents.
