The DFB has appointed Bastian Dankert to referee the game against Mainz. He’s assisted by Rene Rohde and Marcel Unger, with Harm Osmers acting as VAR. The 41-year-old from Rostock oversaw last season’s game away at Mainz, with Lucas Alario scoring the only goal of the day.
While spectators should never arrive late at the BayArena when the Werkself are in action, that’s especially the case this Saturday. Seven of the 15 goals Gerardo Seoane’s side have scored in the league this season have come in the opening quarter of an hour.
That total is a new record in the Bundesliga, and Seoane has said he wants to build on that against the 05ers: “It’ll be about being active from the first minute.”
Ze Elias came to the BayArena in summer 1996 from Brazilian side Corinthians and was part of the Leverkusen squad that finished runners-up in the league. The midfielder played 23 times under new coach Christoph Daum. After a year with the Werkself, Elias moved on to Inter Milan. Today is his 45th birthday, so happy birthday!
Calling all Bayer 04 fans: The Werkself will play Pisa SC, newly promoted to Serie A, at the BayArena as part of the season opener. The clash with the club from Tuscany is on Tuesday, 5 August with the kick-off at 18:00 CET. Entrance to the stadium with a wide range of entertainment provided is possible from 15:00 CEST. Bayer 04 Leverkusen have signed the 17-year-old forward Dustin Buck. The Germany youth international joins from the youth set-up at FC Augsburg. The technically gifted and fast attacker will strengthen the Werkself U19 squad.

A great night for 'Calle': Bayer 04 new signing Carlotta Wamser helped Germany to an opening win in the Women's Euro in Switzerland with an impressive performance. After coming on as a substitute in the 2-0 victory over Poland in Group C, the winger provided an assist and helped set up the second goal. The 21-year-old earned great praise from her coach and teammates in her first tournament match.

The Werkself will welcome Serie A newcomers Pisa SC to the BayArena for a friendly on Tuesday, 5 August (kick-off: 18:00 CEST / stadium opens: 15:00) as part of the season opener celebrations.
