It's over seven and a half years since Nürnberg last set foot in the BayArena. On that occasion, Lucas Alario and Kevin Volland secured a 2-0 victory for the Werkself. It's a bit longer since the last cup encounter between the two clubs: in August 1993, Ulf Kirsten, Paulo Sergio and Bernd Schuster fired Bayer 04 to a 3-0 win over FCN. The recent head-to-head record looks similarly positive from a Leverkusen point of view, with six wins from the last seven competitive encounters. It's almost 15 years since the Black-and-Reds last lost to Nürnberg.
The Werkself have had plenty of joy in the DFB Pokal in recent times, too, reaching at least the semi-finals three years in a row. Before the 2-0 defeat at home to FC Bayern Munich in the semis last season, Bayer 04 had won six consecutive cup ties at the BayArena. While Carles Martínez's side can start a new run on Wednesday night, Patrik Schick has the next record in sight. The Czech international has scored six goals in cup home matches - no Werkself player has ever hit seven.

Nürnberg are right in the mix in the promotion race in Bundesliga 2. After 14 competitive games without defeat, going back to the end of last season, Miroslav Klose's men lost again for the first time at the weekend, going down 1-0 to 1. FC Kaiserslautern despite having the majority of the chances. Ali Zoma, the joint top scorer in the second tier with Felix Klaus (Greuther Fürth) on seven goals, will miss out in Leverkusen, as he already did against FCK following shoulder surgery. However, Klose is not worried by his absence - find out how Der Club are shaping up ahead of the clash with the Werkself in our extensive opposition profile.
For the 2026/27 season, the BayArena has been fitted with a new Wi-Fi infrastructure. Instead of the ‘BayArena’ network, fans can now enjoy even better browsing on one of two faster networks: ‘Bayer04’ is the Wi-Fi network for modern devices and offers better bandwidth. Devices that, for technical reasons, cannot connect to this network, or on which it does not appear, can use ‘Bayer04-classic’ as a similarly good alternative. Since the home match against SC Freiburg, the original ‘BayArena’ network has now been switched off for good.

Werkself player Ibrahim Maza has been named in the top ten in the ‘Men’s Young Talent of the Year’ category for 2026. The 20-year-old was at the London Palladium on Monday evening for the 2026 Ballon d’Or awards ceremony. Fernando Carro, Bayer 04 CEO, also attended the ceremony. Lamine Yamal of Barcelona was named the winner in the ‘Men’s Young Talent of the Year’ category.

It has been a long time since feeling what it’s like to come away empty-handed. The last – and so far only – defeat of the season, in Elversberg, was two months ago. Since then, Bayer 04 have followed that up with seven wins and a draw. Now it has happened again away to TSG Hoffenheim. As the match progressed, the Werkself grew in confidence and “could even have scored the opening goal”, as Robert Andrich said after the game.
