For Wirtz it is the next individual award for the 2023/24 campaign: In addition to his three Player of the Month awards, the Leverkusen star had already earned a place in the Team of the Season 2023/24 organised by EA Sports. Also his solo run in the 2-1 win against SC Freiburg in the autumn of 2023 was voted Goal of the Month for October and Goal of the Year 2023. Following winning the vote as Bundesliga Player of the Season, organised by the German Football League (DFL), Wirtz has now come out on top in the Bayer 04 vote for the best Leverkusen Player of the Season 2023/24.
Wirtz had the most goal involvements of all Werkself players last term. The playmaker provided 20 assists and scored 18 goals – unforgettable in particular is hat-trick in the 5-0 win against Werder Bremen that helped seal the first German league title win for Bayer 04 in the club's history.
Granit Xhaka, a new signing last season, was the runner-up. The midfield maestro established himself as a regular starter and a crowd favourite in his first season under the Cross. Central defender Jonathan Tah was in third spot behind Wirtz and Xhaka after standing out all season with his impressive performances at the heart of the Werkself defence.
The top five in the vote:
The German national team, featuring Werkself player Carlotta Wamser, agonisingly missed out on a place in the Women's EURO final. In a tense and dramatic semi-final, the DFB Team lost 1-0 after extra time against world champions Spain. The 21-year-old summer signing from Eintracht Frankfurt played the full 120 minutes, continuing her strong form at the tournament.

It was the same this time round when a small delegation led by Luiz Felipe, the son of Paulo Sergio and technical director of the recently opened Bayer 04 Football Academy São Paulo, visited the German School in Rio de Janeiro and held a training session as part of the Bayer 04 Brazil Tour. On the football pitch in front of the school building, 70 children had an afternoon full of fun and joy with a view of the world famous Christ the Redeemer.
