Six Leverkusen players named in 2023/24 Bundesliga Team of the Season

Bundesliga champions Bayer 04 have also dominated the division’s Team of the Season after football fans around the world named Jonathan Tah, Alejandro Grimaldo, Jeremie Frimpong, Granit Xhaka, Florian Wirtz and Victor Boniface in the Bundesliga’s best XI for 2023/24, in cooperation with EA Sports.

That means six of the 11 players come from Leverkusen, with one more from Borussia Dortmund and two each from Bayern Munich and VfB Stuttgart.

Three newcomers make cut

Tah has started 28 of the 31 Bundesliga games so far and has impressed as the defensive leader. Frimpong already featured in last year’s Team of the Season, while summer signing Grimaldo means the two wing-backs have a combined 39 goal contributions in the league.

Control in midfield comes from Xhaka, who also returned to Germany this season. Wirtz and another summer signing Boniface then provide the goals up front.

The 2023/24 Bundesliga Team of the Season:

  • Goalkeeper: Gregor Kobel
  • Defence: Jeremie Frimpong, Jonathan Tah, Waldemar Anton, Alejandro Grimaldo
  • Midfield: Jamal Musiala, Granit Xhaka, Florian Wirtz
  • Attack: Serhou Guirassy, Harry Kane, Victor Boniface

How the selection process worked:

A total of 40 players were nominated based on their stats in the Bundesliga this term. Similar to the league’s Player of the Month voting system, votes from fans account for 40% of the total, with a further 30% from a set of experts and selected media representatives, and another 30% from the selections of the 18 club captains.
