Swiss international Granit Xhaka has joined Bayer 04 for the 2023/24 season. The midfield strategist joined from top English club Arsenal, where he held a leadership role from 2016. Xhaka agreed a contract to 2028 at Leverkusen. "His footballing quality is well known. But above all, there are only a few players who can lead a team as convincingly as he can thanks to outstanding mentality and personality," said Simon Rolfes, sporting managing director at Bayer 04, in praise of the former Mönchengladbach player when he signed.

A busy day at the BayArena: Xhaka at kids press conference – Tella faces the media
The Easter holidays enticed a large number of Bayer 04 fans to come to the training ground at the BayArena, today Wednesday 16 April, to watch the Werkself at an open training session in the afternoon. Afterwards, the players and head coach Xabi Alonso took time out to sign autographs and pose for photographs. And there was a lot going on besides: While midfield maestro Granit Xhaka fielded questions at an entertaining children's press conference, including the story behind his squad number 34, Nathan Tella faced the media.

Xhaka named Swiss Player of the Year
An honour for Granit Xhaka: The Werkself player and Switzerland record appearance maker has been voted Swiss Player of the Year 2024 at the fourth Swiss Football Night on Monday 13 January. At the event organised by the Swiss Football Association (SFV) and the Swiss Football League (SFL) it was the third award in succession for Xhaka.

Bayer 04 fans can vote now up to 24 June (18.00 CEST) for the goal scored by Robert Andrich to make it 2-0 against FC Augsburg on Bundesliga matchday 34 or for the Granit Xhaka strike in the 1-0 victory over FC Kaiserslautern in the DFB Pokal final.
