News in brief: Andrich fourth in vote for Player of the Season

You have decided: The vote for Player of the Season is over and there is a winner. Before that is announced on Friday 17 June, Bayer 04 will bring the other top placings every day this week. Yesterday (Monday 13 June) it was right-back Jeremie Frimpong in fifth place. Werkself player Robert Andrich is in fourth spot. In addition, it is one year since Patrik Schick’s wonder goal in the European Championship finals and Bayer 04 join the appeal for blood donors. Tuesday’s news in brief.

A great honour for Robert Andrich: The Werkself midfielder has been voted into fourth place in the Player of the Season rankings by Black and Red supporters – congratulations from Bayer 04.

The Black and Reds number 8 quickly established himself as a key player in the team last season with 26 appearances. With four goals and 191 challenges won the 27-year-old proved in his first season under the Bayer Cross that he can impress in attack and defence with his strong mentality.

HERE is a video clip of one of his best moves..

Schick's wonder goal one year ago

Anniversary of a stroke of genius: One year ago to the day, Werkself striker Patrik Schick scored a spectacular goal from 50 yards out in the Euros group match between Scotland and the Czech Republic. No player has ever scored a goal from that distance in the European Championship finals before. The Czech striker definitely secured his place in the record books with that finish.

In an interview with the Werks11 Magazine the Werkself number 14 was almost too modest: “Of course, it was a special goal but in the end it counts the same as any other goal.”  FIFA took a slightly different view and nominated the 26-year-old for the Puskas Award at the start of the year as one the top three goals in 2021.

The goal is still worth watching a year later. HERE is that long-range strike to watch and enjoy again.

donate blood and save lives

Today (Tuesday 14 June) is World Blood Donor Day. The German Red Cross is again appealing for blood donors on this year’s day of action because of shortages of blood and plasma.

Bayer 04 are taking part by organising a blood donor session at the BayArena on Wednesday 3 August in partnership with the DRK Blood Donor Service West. The session will be held in the Premium Lounge (access via the North-Wet entrance) from 15.00 to 19.00 CEST.

All other information on registration and the blood donation process can be found on the DRK website.

Bayer 04 women meet bundesliga criteria

The German Football Association (DFB) has again imposed special criteria the clubs have to meet to participate in the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga in the 2022/23 season. That includes the clubs engaging permanent staff in certain areas such as marketing and the media. The aim of these conditions is the promotion of professionalism in the clubs, above all on the administrative level.

All the clubs qualifying for the Bundesliga have already implemented those criteria. And the Bayer 04 Women have fulfilled the necessary conditions. Only the teams in the Bundesliga play-offs still need to complete this procedure.

U16 Qualifier second leg at kurtkotten

The U15 team are tonight playing the second leg in a U16 qualifier. Last Saturday’s 5-0 win against FC Pesch in the first leg in Cologne has given the Werkself youngsters an important advantage ahead of the return match. In today’s game, the team under head coach Benjamin Adam will be looking to seal participation in the U16 Middle Rhine League in the coming 2022/23 season. The game at the Kurtekotten Performance Centre kicks off at 18.00 CEST..

happy birthday

The former Bayer 04 defender Dirk Schlegel is 61 today. Many happy returns. Schlegel played for BFC Dynamo in the GDR and in 1983 he defected with a teammate from a tournament in Yugoslavia and went on to continue his playing career with Leverkusen in the Bundesliga. The player born in East Berlin made 24 appearances in the Bundesliga in his time at Bayer 04 and he scored four goals as a left-back. Schlegel went on to work as a youth and second team coach with league rivals Hertha Berlin where he helped bring through talents like Jerome Boateng and Sejad Salihovic.

Matchday news #B04FCSP: DFB Pokal quarter-final against battling St. Pauli

As in the past two years, the Werkself are aiming to come out on top in the DFB Pokal quarter-finals on Tuesday night, 3 February (kick-off: 20:45 CET). With eleven home games in a row without defeat against the Kiezkicker, the Black and Reds go into the floodlit match in confident mood. But the Pokal, as is often said, has its own magic and the team from the Millerntor has much more to offer than the current 17th place in the Bundesliga would suggest. After all, Bayer 04 are one of the big German teams the combative Hamburgers have already made life difficult for this season. The matchday news.
