Robert Andrich put the Werkself ahead with a spectacular volley five minutes into the 4–3 away win in Mainz. The volley by Leverkusen’s number 8, following an attempted headed clearance by Phillipp Mwene, was clocked at a speed of 109 km/h.
Moussa Diaby scored on 65 minutes to make it 4–2. The Frenchman controlled the ball on the edge of the penalty area following a pass from Afonso Moreira and, with a little help from the crossbar, curled it into the top left corner of the net.

Alongside the Leverkusen duo, goals from Maximilian Beier (Borussia Dortmund), Ísak Jóhannesson (FC Köln), Chris Führich (VfB Stuttgart), Michael Olise (Bayern Munich), Miro Muheim (Hamburger SV), Joe Scally (Borussia Mönchengladbach) and Felix Keidel and Cole Campbell (both SV Elversberg) are also in the running.
The Bundesliga has announced the nominees for the ‘Top Goal of the Month’ award for October. Fans of the Werkself can now vote for, amongst others, Robert Andrich’s stunning volley from the match against Mainz 05 or Moussa Diaby’s curling shot into the top corner from the same fixture. Voting, exclusively on the Bundesliga app, remains open until Sunday, 8 November (23:59 CET).

Head coach Carles Martínez wants to learn from this so that, in future, they can “win this sort of match too”. The Werkself review.
