Battling display goes unrewarded: Germany and Carlotta Wamser miss out on EURO final

The German national team, featuring Werkself player Carlotta Wamser, agonisingly missed out on a place in the Women's EURO final. In a tense and dramatic semi-final, the DFB Team lost 1-0 after extra time against world champions Spain. The 21-year-old summer signing from Eintracht Frankfurt played the full 120 minutes, continuing her strong form at the tournament.

Right-back Wamser made life difficult for Spanish star Claudia Pina throughout as well as regularly getting involved in attack herself. In stoppage time, goalkeeper Cata Coll prevented Wamser from scoring the winning goal from close range. Instead it was Best FIFA Women's Player Aitana Bonmati who clinched victory for Spain in extra time (113').

DFB-Frauen nach Abpfiff

Wamser has emerged as one of the stars of Germany's EURO campaign, even though she missed the dramatic quarter-final win over France (6-5 on penalties) because of suspension. In the opening 2-0 victory against Poland, the full-back replaced injured captain Giulia Gwinn and impressed on her debut with a faultless performance, including an assist.

With Gwinn sidelined for the rest of the tournament, Wamser, who joined Leverkusen from Frankfurt this summer, was the like-for-like replacement in the starting line-up against Denmark, where she impressed again in a 2-1 win. In the 4-1 loss to Sweden in the third group match, she was sent off for a handball on the goal-line in the 32nd minute with the score at 2-1, having earlier set up the opening goal for Jule Brand (7').

TOURNAMENT DEBUT FOR Cornelia KrameR

For Wamser's future team-mate Cornelia Kramer, her debut European Championship ended at the group stage. The striker lost all three games with Denmark and finished bottom of Group B. Kramer gained her first EURO minutes as a 61st-minute substitute in the 2-1 defeat to Germany. The 22-year-old will return to Leverkusen for the start of the second phase of pre-season on 4 August.
