“The most important thing is that we’re back together again after this break. It was longer than usual. Our international players have played a lot and played well, and the lads who stayed here have also worked really hard. The atmosphere is good; everyone wants to play and is looking forward to tomorrow,” said head coach Carles Martínez at the pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon.
How did the coach make the most of the break, apart from the training sessions? “The days were a good opportunity, for example, to have more in-depth conversations with the players. On a personal level, I was able to sort out a few things I hardly ever have time for otherwise. But I’m now glad that we’re back in action. Competitive games are what we really like!”
And so, back to the football: Mainz are currently level on seven points, one place behind Werkself in sixth. The Rheinhessen side have been particularly strong away from home so far, while at home they have picked up just one of their seven points. For the Werkself, it’s the other way round with six points at home and just one away. For Martínez, however, this “doesn’t matter”.
He continued: “Mainz are a good team; we’re a good team. We’re determined to improve our away record and come away with three points. Tomorrow’s match is an important one. I want to see my team put in the same performance they did against Leipzig (2-0, ed.).”
The questions then moved on to discuss some personal details. When asked about Ibrahim Maza, who picked up a knock in Algeria’s last international match, Martínez said: “He’s better. We have to check in the training today and then decide whether he’s ready for tomorrow.”
Christian Kofane, Kennet Eichhorn and Guéla Doué will not make it. When asked about the latter two, Martínez said: “Guéla is working on his comeback; it’s still taking some time. However, the process is going well, as planned. We’re in touch with Kennet; we speak regularly, including about football in general. Despite his absence, he wants to feel part of the team, and that’s what we’re aiming for as well.”
Speaking about Ezequiel Fernández, whose recent strong performances have earned him his debut for Argentina, the coach said: “When I arrived at Leverkusen, I spoke to him – as I did with all the other players – and told him that I don’t place too much importance on past seasons. For me, everything started from scratch and everyone had a chance. He’s done a very good job so far.”
3,100 Bayer 04 supporters are set to support the Werkself in the away end at the MEWA ARENA. Those cheering on the Black and Reds from home can follow Werkself Radio and Bayer 04 live text updates. Werkself Radio commentator Niko Hartmann will be joined by club representative and 1988 UEFA Cup winner Falko Götz.

The Bayer 04 women’s team secured a win in the friendly during the international break. Without a total of eight international players, coach Roberto Pätzold’s team defeated Bundesliga 2 side Borussia Mönchengladbach 3–1 at the Kurtekotten Training Centre, thanks to goals from Lobke Loonen (1’, penalty), Caroline Kehrer (41') and Valentina Mädl (66').

Bayer 04 will have to manage without striker Christian Kofane in the coming weeks. The 20-year-old sustained a muscle injury to his left thigh on international duty with the Cameroon national team during the recent international break. This will prevent him from playing in the upcoming Werkself matches.
