#B04eSports: Win and defeat against Hamburg teams

The Bayer 04 eSports team had mixed feelings after matchdays 19 and 20 in the VBL Club Championship: A 7-1 defeat to FC St Pauli was followed later on Tuesday evening by a 6-3 victory against Hamburg SV. The Black and Reds are currently tenth in the North West division.

In the first match of the evening, Marc ‘MARC_LDW23’ Landwehr was up against St Pauli’s Kamal ‘FCSP_KAMAL’ Kamboj – in the 1v1 on PlayStation 5. The Leverkusen player demonstrated his ability to fight back by securing a 2-2 draw after being 2-0.

The following 1v1 on Xbox Series S/X saw Fabian ‘B04_DUBZJE’ de Cae lose 4-2, and Landwehr and Paul ‘B04_PAUL’ Degner suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat in the 2v2 game. “We could have got a result,” said Degner afterwards. “We had more chances but unfortunately we weren’t able to take them.”

Landwehr wins 1v1 game

After the point earned earlier in the evening, PS5 pro Landwehr clocked up three against Hamburg SV: Thanks to a late goal, he beat Hamburg’s Daniel ‘HSV_DANIEL7’ Dwelk 1-0. De Cae took a 1-0 lead on Xbox but ended up losing 2-1.

The following 2v2 was won by Landwehr and Degner – the scoreline was 2-0 after 90 virtual minutes. Degner’s assessment: “We can be happy with the matchday against HSV.”

Paderborn and Bremen await

The Werkself eSports team are currently tenth in the table on 74 points. There is a six-point gap to the top six.

De Cae and Co. are back in action next Tuesday evening (15 February). From 18.00 CET, there are matches against SC Paderborn 07, and that is followed two hours later by the fixture with the current top team SV Werder Bremen.

Season review 2025/26, part II: Highs and lows of an eventful season

Lying third in the Bundesliga, the Werkself made a faltering start in 2026 after the winter break, but gradually rediscovered winning ways and, as in the previous campaign, were among the top 16 in Europe and the top four in the DFB Pokal. In the Bundesliga, the Werkself also remained in the race for Champions League qualification right to the end. However, because setbacks repeatedly crept into the Werkself's performances between good displays and crucial games, it was not quite enough to secure a UCL spot in the end. A season with many ups and downs brought sixth place and qualification for the UEFA Europa League. Part II of the review of the 2025/26 season.

2025/26 season review, part I: Upheaval, change, euphoria

Following the final match of the 2025/26 season, the prevailing feeling was naturally one of disappointment after missing out on qualification for the Champions League. The Werkself finished the Bundesliga in sixth place, meaning they'll start the 2026/27 campaign in the Europa League. "But to talk negatively about everything now because of that would be wrong," stressed captain Robert Andrich following the final game, knowing that the past year at Bayer 04 was marked, more than almost any other, by the start of a new era and the courage to change – and in particular, the belief in a positive direction. Everyone was aware this process would need time. The first part of the 2025/26 season review.
