What the papers say: 'The Werkself stuck at it right to the end'

Fate sealed by early brace: The Werkself lost 2-0 at Bayer Munich on Tuesday night, 20 April, due to two goals conceded in the first 15 minutes. The representatives of the media note an improvement in performance by the Wolf team in the second half and after a change in defensive organisation.

"0-2 at the almost champions. "That is the start of the report in the Bild-Zeitung. Following the win against Bayer 04, FC Bayern can become champions of Germany for the ninth time in succession at the weekend against Mainz 05. The following fact in the report relates to the Werkself and Hannes Wolf: "The new coach suffered his first defeat with Leverkusen in his fourth match."

The tabloid offers an explanation for that: "Bayer completely lacked courage. 'You can't afford to make any mistakes at Bayern. We were very nervous," said key defender Sven Bender.” The best effort on goal in the first half was attributed to centre forward Patrik Schick (21’).

"Substitution brought defensive stability"

The report in the Rheinische Post responds to the statements by the head coach Wolf after the clash at the Allianz Arena: "We got it together at half-time and made a game of it."

Wolf made a double substitution at the start of the second half bringing on Florian Wirtz and Karim Bellarabi for Moussa Diaby and Jeremie Frimpong. The 40-year-old also switched from a back three to a back four. The Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger: "The substitution brought defensive stability as well as increased determination going forward." Bellarabi hit the crossbar on 69 minutes and, shortly after that, substitute Nadiem Amiri was twice foiled by the Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer.

kicker reports an "evenly balanced" second 45 minutes. The Wolf team "never gave up. The Werkself stuck at it right to the end." But they were unable to find the back of the net on the night in Munich.
