French forward Moussa Diaby has returned to Bayer 04 at the close of the summer 2026 transfer window. He joined from Saudi club Al-Ittihad and has signed a contract with Leverkusen running until 30 June 2031. Diaby, who previously played for the Werkself from 2019 to 2023, will once again be chasing goals wearing the number 19 shirt. During his time in Saudi Arabia, he won the national championship in commanding fashion in 2025 alongside world-class striker Karim Benzema.

“Diaby! Diaby! Diaby!” was the cry around the BayArena as the Werkself danced in front of the north stand following their 4-0 win over Union Berlin. Captain Edmond Tapsoba gave his new (and old) teammate a friendly shove forward to take in the acclaim from the fans. The returning Frenchman was typically reserved in thanking the supporters but was clearly emotional about what was happening.

“Welcome home” was the message from a visually emotional fan in the direction of Moussa Diaby after Wednesday’s open training session. The French winger had just appeared on the BayArena training ground for the first time in three years following his return to Bayer 04. And before he took time for selfies and autographs, Diaby spoke to the media. Fellow new arrival Guéla Doué was also in action but not with the team for now.
