‘Real role models’ show solidarity – BioBrotbox campaign with Bayer 04

Just in time for the start of the school year, everyone was hard at work again at NaturGut Ophoven. For the 21st time, Bayer 04 have supported the annual ‘BioBrotbox’ campaign, which puts together a healthy breakfast for first-year primary school pupils in Leverkusen – and not only contributed 1,904 muesli bars but also plenty of enthusiasm too: Together with the U19 players Burak Kir and Clinton Wilson, Emily Wallrabenstein and Paulina Platner from the Women’s Bundesliga team helped with the packing. The latter was clearly delighted “that Bayer 04 are helping out with regional projects like this and showing their commitment to the local community”.

Last year, the club supported the initiative as a sponsor; this time, the Black and Reds were once again involved in the packing event as a network partner. Alongside the Bayer 04 players, numerous volunteers from local businesses in Leverkusen-Opladen also joined in filling lunchboxes with a healthy breakfast.

1,950 healthy meals at start of school year

And there were plenty of them: 1,950 healthy and tasty meals were prepared by the volunteers working as a team. As in previous years, the lunch boxes contained a packet of cress, a tea bag, two slices of bread, spreadable cheese, a wooden knife and, of course, Bayer 04 muesli bars. All the products are organically grown or produced.

“Even though the packing was really challenging, it was also great fun working with the other volunteers,” said Emily Wallrabenstein after the event. Her team-mate Paulina Platner added: “I think it’s really great that Bayer 04 are helping out with regional projects like this and showing their commitment to the local community.”

"real role models" for healthy Eating

Bayer 04 has been supporting the BioBrotbox campaign for many years now – for Marianne Ackermann, chair of the NaturGut Ophoven e.V. support association, “a real highlight. Bayer 04 are a reliable and very suitable partner, not least because the players are genuine role models for the children when it comes to healthy eating.”

Frank Linde, community affairs officer at Bayer 04, agreed and added: “It’s also a great opportunity for the players to get to know the other volunteers – many of whom are Bayer 04 fans.” Why does the club get involved in initiatives like this year after year? For Linde, the answer is simple: “These initiatives are important for Leverkusen, and Bayer 04 is part of Leverkusen.”

About the BioBrotbox campaign:

This nationwide initiative, which aims to promote a balanced diet amongst children, provides Year 1 pupils in numerous towns and regions across Germany with a lunchbox filled with a healthy breakfast every year when they start school in the summer. In the city of Leverkusen, the NaturGut Ophoven e.V. support association has been organising the packing campaign since 2006. Bayer 04 has actively supported the association for many years. Furthermore, the Competence Centre will be among the recipients of donations from deposit cup returns.

Diaby homecoming caps off big win at the BayArena

“Diaby! Diaby! Diaby!” was the cry around the BayArena as the Werkself danced in front of the north stand following their 4-0 win over Union Berlin. Captain Edmond Tapsoba gave his new (and old) teammate a friendly shove forward to take in the acclaim from the fans. The returning Frenchman was typically reserved in thanking the supporters but was clearly emotional about what was happening.
