Spanish left-back with strong links to the Werkself: Profile of Miguel Gutiérrez

New signing Miguel Gutiérrez arrives in Leverkusen having won the Champions League, the Spanish league title and an Olympic gold medal. However, the 25-year-old Spaniard, signed from Napoli, is looking to the future – he wants to write the next chapter of success with the Werkself. Bayer04.de takes a closer look at the skilful, attack-minded left-back, who will wear the number 3 jersey.

Miguel Gutiérrez played for Napoli last season. The 25-year-old featured for the Italian side in Serie A, the Coppa Italia and the UEFA Champions League. Across all competitions, he made 36 appearances, including five in the Champions League. Shortly before Christmas, he also won the Italian Super Cup with Napoli – adding yet another title to the Spaniard’s already impressive collection.

Before moving to Italy – his first spell abroad – the Spaniard was at Girona for three years. Gutiérrez played alongside, among others, Aleix Garcia, with whom he will now be back on the pitch in Leverkusen. Garcia was, unsurprisingly, among the first to warmly welcome his former team-mate at the team hotel in Blankenhain. Gutiérrez’s time at Girona also coincided with Spain’s Olympic victory in 2024.

Champions League Title with Vázquez and Real

Born in the south of Madrid, Gutiérrez played for Getafe until he was ten. He then joined Real Madrid and progressed through the club’s youth academy. In 2020, at the age of 19, the left-back won the UEFA Youth League – thanks in part to his goal in the final.

After coming through the ranks of the Real second team, the new Leverkusen signing finally made his debut for Real Madrid’s first team in April 2021; that same year, he was also nominated for the Golden Boy award. In his final season at Real, Gutiérrez and his new Leverkusen team-mate Lucas Vázquez won the Spanish league title and the UEFA Champions League with Los Blancos in the 2021/22 season. Gutiérrez made four appearances as part of the team’s run to the double.

At international level, Gutiérrez played for numerous Spanish youth teams and won the European Championship with the U19s in 2019. In 2024, he also helped Spain to Olympic gold – including a appearance in the final against the hosts, France.

In Leverkusen, the new signing will wear the number 3 jersey – succeeding, among others, Piero Hincapie. The new home jersey with Miguel Gutiérrez’s printing is available HERE.
