Sunday, 28 October 2012, three days after the 4-0 away win at Rapid Vienna, the Werkself are away to Bayern Munich. The record champions under coach Jupp Heynckes have won the first eight games of the season and are top of the league. Bayer 04 are fifth in the table twelve points behind and the Werkself have not won at FC Bayern for 22 years. In cold temperatures and light snow, the game starts as usual at the Allianz Arena – a dominant Bayern side against the Werkself sitting deep. Our team succeeds in escaping the pressure from FC Bayern as the game goes on. On 44 minutes, a counter-attack involving André Schürrle sees him pick out Stefan Kießling at the far post with a whipped-in low cross leaving a tap-in to put the Werkself 1-0 up.
Constant pressure from Bayern in the second half and a deserved equaliser from Mandzukic on 77 minutes. The two coaches Sascha Lewandowski and Sami Hyypiä bring on Jens Hegeler and Sidney Sam for Andre Schürrle and Stefan Kießling on 83 minutes. Three minutes later, Daniel Carvajal plays a long ball into the opposition penalty area and Sidney Sam, not known for his aerial ability, heads the ball against Jerome Boateng and it rolls into the net to secure a sensational 2-1 victory. A Bayer 04 team wins again at FC Bayern the first time in 22 years.
The line-up: Bernd Leno – Daniel Carvajal, Philipp Wollscheid, Ömer Toprak, Hajime Hosogai, Stefan Reinartz, Lars Bender, Simon Rolfes, Gonzalo Castro (Manuel Friedrich 89’), Andre Schürrle (Jens Hegeler 83’), Stefan Kießling (Sidney Sam 83’)
After a mixed start to the season, Bayer 04 travel to Borussia Park in Mönchengladbach on matchday nine in the 2017/18 season. It is Saturday 21 October 2017. Borussia take the lead on seven minutes and deservedly retain the lead to half-time. Bayer 04 coach Heiko Herrlich brings on Julian Brandt in place of Lucas Alario and within 15 minutes the Werkself have turned the 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 lead with goals from Sven Bender, Leon Bailey and Julian Brandt. Two more goals from Kevin Volland and Joel Pohjanpalo secure a sensational away victory.
Here is the line-up: Bernd Leno – Panagiotis Retsos, Jonathan Tah, Sven Bender, Wendell, Lars Bender, Julian Baumgartlinger, Kai Havertz, Kevin Volland (Joel Pohjanpalo 79’), Leon Bailey (Karim Bellarabi 84’), Lucas Alario (Julian Brandt 46’)

Show moreSince the establishment of the Bundesliga on 28 July 1962 for the 1963/64 season, there have been five Regional Leagues: North, Berlin, West, South-west and South. The champions of those five leagues qualified directly for promotion play-offs that were played in two groups of four teams. That included the two second-placed teams in the West and South-west Regional Leagues. The two runners-up from the North and the South played a qualifier for the eighth place in the promotion games.

Show moreThere were high summer temperatures in Leverkusen on 25 May 1985. Matchday 32 brings FC Köln to the Ulrich Haberland Stadium with only 13,000 spectators at the derby. That is primarily due to the Werkself with Bayer 04 rarely impressing in that season and they are eleventh in the table before the game just three points ahead of sixteenth, the play-off spot. But with the two points for a win rule back then – two points were awarded for a win – and with the significantly better goal difference, the Werkself need every point to get out of trouble.

Only now would it be decided who were champions and thereby participate in the promotion games to the Bundesliga 2 North. The earlier rivals Viktoria Köln, SC Jülich 10 and Bonner SC have fallen by the wayside.
