Birthday boy of the month two: Andreas Fischer is 60

Andreas ‘Fischi’ Fischer, called 'Heino' by his teammates in Leverkusen due to his very blond hair, was born in Paderborn on 20 October 1964. At youth level he played for SV Marienloh, FC Paderborn, Preußen Münster and TuS Paderborn-Neuhaus.

Yes, I'd like to see videos dispalyed.

Fischi was kept back in class ten, his father took him out of the school and gave him the choice: apprenticeship as a bricklayer, saddler or carpenter. As he knew nothing about the first two careers he became a carpenter and work for three years after completing his apprenticeship.

In 1982/83 he signed for Preußen Münster in the Oberliga Westfalen. From there he moved on to Remscheid. Fischi played for BVL 08 Remscheid in Bundesliga two in 1987/88, got relegated with his club and then shone with outstanding performances in the amateur Oberliga Westfalen.

Andreas came under the Bayer Cross at the age of 24, established himself and stayed for the next five years as right back at the Werkself. His biggest honour during his time at Bayer 04 was winning the DFB Pokal in 1993.

His personal highlight came on 7 December 1991. In the Bundesliga home game against bottom-of-the-table Wattenscheid 09, Fischi scored three goals and he is the only defensive player in our Bundesliga history to achieve that feat. As Ulf Kirsten, goal-getter of the 1990s, scored twice with Jupp Nehl adding another, Bayer 04 clocked up a 6-1 victory, the biggest win in the Bundesliga up to that point.

On the pitch, Fischi was more of a worker rather than a magician as his determination brought him to where he always dreamt of as a child – to the Bundesliga.

After a total of 179 games for the Werkself, scoring 20 goals along the way, Fischi moved north in 1994 to play for Hamburg SV. There he played in the top-flight for another seven years before ending his career with the year in the Regional League West at Rot-Weiss Essen.

After his playing career, tried out being a coach in 2003/04 but only stayed at SC Verl for a season. After that he searched for a career thought about his own carpentry business. But he's put off by the high cost of setting it up. So he makes a complete change. He completed training as a coolingand ventilation engineer, passed the examination for the master's certificate in 2009 and set up his own company.

Today, the father of four children from his first marriage minutes north of Hamburg, lives on a farm where he breeds ponies with his second wife Katrin.

Dear Fischi, I wish you many happy returns on your 60th birthday! Stay fit and healthy and have a good one!

Birthday boy of the month: Jacek Krzynowek turns 50

Jacek Krzynowek was born on 15 May 1976 in Kamiensk, Poland, and grew up as a typical country boy. He spent his childhood less in structured training sessions and more on simple pitches, where he spent hours playing football with older boys. He realised early on that he had exceptional shooting power and enormous stamina. But for a long time, he didn't appreciate just how much talent he had. While others dream of a great career, professional football initially seems like a distant world to him that he only knows from television.

Legend: Carsten Ramelow - The perennial favourite

Carsten ‘Calle’ Ramelow was born in Berlin on 20 March 1974. He began his football career in the youth teams at Tasmania 73, Tennis Borussia, SC Siemensstadt and, last but not least, Hertha Berlin. It was here that he reached the DFB Pokal final in 1993 with the Hertha Bubis team, the amateur team at Hertha Berlin, against his future employer Bayer 04 Leverkusen. But even he was unable to prevent the Werkself's 1-0 victory thanks to a goal from Ulf Kirsten.

Match of the month: 30 years ago - Last-minute rescue

The 1995/1996 season brought some innovations. For the first time, each player was given a squad number with his name printed on the back of the jersey. For the first time, coaches were allowed to make three substitutions and for the first time, three points are awarded for a win. And for the first time, I am no longer my team's number 1. I wear it on my back, but Dirk Heinen has taken over me in goal. So at first I sat on the bench a bit offended, but in the Rückrunde I realised I also had to make my contribution to the success of a team.

Bayer 04 - 01.05.2026

History: 75 years ago - The 1950/51 season (May)

Bayer 04 Leverkusen, promoted to the Oberliga West, welcome VfL 99 Köln for the last game of a successful season. This time, the crowd of just 2,000 spectators saw more of a friendly than a championship match. Little fight, little goalmouth action and few moves in midfield to warm the hearts of the spectators. It takes a corner to give Bayer 04 the lead. Peter Röger is on hand with his head and nods home on 43 minutes for the half-time lead. When Karl-Heinz Spikofski increased the lead to 2-0 a quarter of an hour after the restart, the result was settled. The team from Cologne were able to reduce the deficit to 2-1 in the final minute, but in the end the spectators went home looking forward to the first season for a Bayer 04 team in Oberliga West 1.
