At the age of 19, Piero Hincapie left his home continent for the first time to follow, according to his own words, "the outstanding reputation in the whole of South America" of Bayer 04. The Ecuador international, who made a name for himself at the Copa America in the summer of 2021 with first-class performances, signed a contract at Leverkusen to 30 June 2026. Before signing for the Werkself, the 1.84 metre tall central defender played for the Argentinian top-flight club Atlético Talleres who he joined in the summer of 2020. Before that, Hincapie wore the shirt of Independiente del Valle in Ecuador where he made his debut as a professional player.
