At the age of 19, Piero Hincapie left his home continent for the first time and followed what he described as Bayer 04's “excellent reputation throughout South America.” The Ecuadorian international, who attracted attention with his first-class performances at the Copa America in the summer of 2021, signed a contract in Leverkusen that is valid until June 30, 2026. The 1.84-meter-tall center back played for Argentine first division club Atlético Talleres before joining Bayer, which he joined in the summer of 2020. Prior to that, Hincapie had worn the jersey of Independiente del Valle in Ecuador, where he made his professional debut.
