Following a 0-0 draw at Red Star Belgrade, Bayer 04 secure a convincing 3-0 win in the second leg against the top Yugoslavian club. By August 2001 it is clear: The European tour can start. After the terror attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington on 11 September, the game against Fenerbahce due to be played the next day is postponed.
