Germany dominated proceedings for long periods but were initially unable to convert their chances – and were then punished in the 43rd minute when they conceded a goal to fall 1-0 behind. Hamburg’s Otto Stange equalised just before half-time. Nothing much happened in the second half until Bayer 04’s home-grown talent Francis Onyeka – currently on loan at Elversberg – hammered a lay-off straight into the net with a first-time finisvolley to score the much-celebrated 2–1 winner (90+1’). The game turned on its head. A place in the final was secured.
So Germany’s dream of a third U19 European Championship title – following those in 2008 and 2014 – lives on. The final is on Saturday, 11 July, at 20:00 CEST in Wrexham. Coach Christian Wörns’s side will then be looking to take revenge for their 4-0 defeat to Spain in the group stage, a match where both teams rested a lot of first-team regulars. The match can be watched live on DFB.TV and on the RTL Sport YouTube channel.
The tournament also serves as a qualifier for the 2027 U20 World Cup in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan. The four European Championship semi-finalists – including Germany – qualify automatically for the U20 World Cup.

Bayer 04 have named Jorginho, a 1994 World Cup winner with Brazil, an official club legend. He is the second former Werkself player, after Paulo Sergio, to be accorded this special honour. For many years, the former Leverkusen defender has been deeply committed to helping people in need in his home city of Rio de Janeiro. More than 25 years ago, Jorginho launched the Bola pra Frente project, through which he uses the money he earned as a player – including during his time at Bayer 04 – to support children and young people in the favelas in particular. During a trip to Brazil lasting several days, Fernando Carro, CEO at Bayer 04, assured Jorginho of the club’s support for Bola pra Frente for at least another five years.
