Martínez ahead of league opener: ‘I want to see energy and passion’

The Bundesliga is back. On Saturday 29 August (kick-off: 15:30 CEST), the Werkself are away to SV 07 Elversberg on matchday 1 of the new season. Ahead of the clash at the URSAPHARM Arena on Kaiserlinde, head coach Carles Martínez spoke, amongst other things, about the importance of a successful start and the motivation of the league newcomers from the Saarland.

“We want to show what we’ve been working on over the past few weeks. I want to see energy and passion,” head coach Carles Martínez said at the pre-match press conference on Friday lunchtime. He sees Elversberg as an opponent “who have developed well and didn’t get promoted for nothing. They’re playing in the Bundesliga because they’ve earned it. We’re playing against a team that defends well and understands the game.”

Martínez: "always give it your all"

For the club from the Saarland, this match is their first in the top flight of German football. Elversberg are club number 59 to play in the Bundesliga, so tomorrow’s fixture will be a special moment for them. Martínez therefore expects a highly motivated opponent: “The club, the fans, the coach and the players will be full of anticipation tomorrow. It’ll probably be a bit like a party. They’ll certainly give it their all.”

Martínez is also demanding total commitment from his own team: “Football is becoming increasingly competitive. Everyone can compete. You always have to give your all – that’s more important than ever these days. It will be a very important match for us too. Following our successful cup match, we want to get off to a good start in the league. Three points are very important.”

Flekken starts against Elversberg

On the subject of the line-up, Martínez revealed that Mark Flekken will be in goal against Elversberg. “He’s had a very good week in training,” said the Spanish head coach.

When asked about the general goalkeeping policy, Martínez explained: “Both are doing a brilliant job. The idea is for Mark to play in the league and for Janis (Blaswich, ed.) to be in goal in the cup. But of course, you always keep an eye on how the season unfolds.”
