Matchday news #OFIB04: Looking to extend Europa League run in Crete

Two games – two wins: Bayer 04 have picked up maximum points from their two matches so far in the league phase of the UEFA Europa League. What's more, of their previous 14 UEL matches, Bayer 04 have lost just one. Away to OFI Crete, Carles Martínez’s side are looking to add another successful performance on the European stage to their string of impressive displays. The Greeks, for their part, have been waiting four matches for a win, but Leverkusen should be on their guard: OFI’s most recent victory came against a German side. Today's matchday news.

40 years across Europe. Still Creating History.

Under this motto, Bayer 04 are celebrating 40 years of European football this season, featuring great nights, unforgettable moments and special encounters – yesterday, today and tomorrow. On 17 September 1986, the Werkself played their first European match against Swedish side Kalmar FF. Whilst former players look back during the 2026/27 Europa League campaign, today’s Werkself are aiming to add their own chapters to the history books. And an exclusive European jersey links the decades with the silvery sheen of the gleaming trophy.

#OFIB04: match facts

Bayer 04 vs. OFI Crete – this fixture has actually taken place once before. As part of the UEFA Intertoto (UI) Cup, which was held until 2009 before the respective domestic league campaigns kicked off and was the last chance for clubs to qualify for the UEFA Cup, the Werkself hosted the team from the Greek island at the Ulrich-Haberland-Stadion in 1995. Due to the summer break, many of Leverkusen’s first-team players were on holiday, which is why a number of players from the reserves and the club’s own youth academy took to the pitch. Nevertheless, the home side had the Greeks under control for the full 90 minutes and, despite creating a wealth of chances, only won thanks to a penalty converted by Markus Kurth in the 36th minute.

Overall, Bayer 04 have generally looked in command against Greek opponents: of their last six matches in major European competitions, the Black and Reds have lost just one. Most recently, the Werkself progressed to the next round of the Champions League play-offs last season thanks to a 2–0 first-leg victory and a goalless draw in the second leg against Olympiacos. In the Europa League, too, only one of Leverkusen’s last 16 matches has ended in defeat. On the Mediterranean island, Carles Martínez’s side could secure their third win in their third Europa League game of the current campaign.

OFI Crete, on the other hand, have been waiting for a win for four competitive matches. Their 2–0 victory over TSG Hoffenheim on Matchday 1 of the league phase of the Europa League was followed by three defeats and a draw. Coach Christos Kontis’s side also lost their second Europa League game against Stade Rennes 2–1 after having taken the lead. Against the Kraichgau side, the Cretans’ formula for success consisted of disciplined defensive work and efficient counter-attacks. Our in-depth opposition profile reveals what awaits the Werkself on the island and which players in the OFI squad already have some Bundesliga experience.
