Guidelines for fan activities at the BayArena

Bayer 04 Leverkusen Fußball GmbH are very interested in having a positive and colourful atmosphere at the BayArena for home games. That includes choreography, which has become an essential part of fan culture for both home and away fans. In order for choreography at the BayArena to be performed safely and without problems, the following guidelines for implementation and approval have been agreed in discussion with the local authority building control section and the Leverkusen Fire Brigade. They apply to the 2017/2018 season and are compulsory.

ChoreograPHY AND LARGE BAnnerS in the stands at the BayArena

Choreography and fan activities are to be agreed with the event management ahead of a particular event. As a rule, the first meeting should be held ten to fourteen days before the event is held.

The event management will decide on the proposed choreography and/or fan activities in terms of feasibility and integration into the running of the event.

For choreography and large banners, intended for use in the stands, materials used must comply to the requirements of B1 (low flammability) set out in DIN 4102 (or alternatively DIN EN 13501).

Proof must be provided in the form of a test certificate issued by a testing station in accordance with Para. 25 MBO 2012. The documents are to be presented to the event management ahead of the organisational meeting (approximately five days before as a rule).

If there are differences between the use in the materials and the approval certificate for the material then a risk assessment is required to ensure there is no possible danger.

Choreography is time limited. Materials are to be removed from the stands and the stadium immediately after the choreography has taken place.

The content of the choreography is not part of this agreement.

Summary: Presentation of a certificate in accordance with DIN 4102 or DIN EN 13501 for materials supplied and used – Assessment by the event management – Risk analysis – Approval by event management – Flame test before completion of the choreography/fan activity.

Choreography or fan activities using materials without certification of low flammability can be treated with appropriate flame retardants so that the temporary characteristics of low flammability can be achieved the duration that the choreography is displayed.

Treatment with appropriate flame retardants is only to be undertaken by qualified personnel in accordance with manufacturers instructions. Low flammability is also to be checked locally with a flame test and approved by the event management.

The participants at the flame tests are, in addition to the people responsible for the choreography and a fan representative, the event manager, head of security and the technical team leader on behalf of Bayer 04 Leverkusen Fußball GmbH. Choreography is time-limited. The materials used in the choreography are to be removed from the stands and the stadium immediately after the event.
Summary: Proof of professional treatment of the materials provided unused – Assessment by the event management – Risk analysis – Approval by event management – Flame tests before implementation of the choreography/fan activity

Choreography and Fan ACTIVITIES with MaterialS <DIN A3

For materials not bigger than DIN A3 (approx. 300 x 420 mm), it is generally the case that certification of low flammability can be disregarded as the size of the object is about the same as an opened matchday programme. A risk assessment is to be undertaken on how to prevent the possibility of fire (e.g. provision of additional extinguishers, waste bins and continual cleaning measures).
Summary: Assessment by the event management – Risk analysis – Approval by event management – Taking required additional measures.

Werkself review #B04VfB: Honest words and looking ahead

It was a disappointing Saturday night. The Werkself lost 4-1 to VfB Stuttgart to start the new year on Bundesliga matchday 16 in 2025/26, a result that left both players and fans disappointed. "We played without any passion," said Alejandro Grimaldo honestly afterwards. Teammate Jarell Quansah was even more self-critical, emphasising: "We were miles off it in the first half. You can't put in a performance like that, especially in front of our own fans and I can only apologise to them, to be honest." Read on for the reaction, facts and stats from the clash with VfB Stuttgart in the Werkself review.
