04 questions for Jonathan Tah

Jonathis season there have been three close but very different matches against FC Bayern in the Bundesliga (1-1, 0-0) and in the DFB Pokal (1-0). Bayern Munich had the upper hand at times but recently you dominated the game in the league. How do you expect Bayern Munich will play on Wednesday?

Tah: A top team with lots of experience in this competition. There will definitely be two different games. Away there will be moments where the opposition perhaps has more control. Then we have to show that defensive work can also be fun. They will be challenging games but that's exactly what we're looking forward to. We don't have to fear any team as we've already shown often enough. And we want to show that again now.

It's the first game against Bayern in the Champions League. How do you feel about matches between two teams from the same country playing each other at the start of the knockout phase in the new format of the Champions League?

Tah: It's a bit of a pity for the nation and the Bundesliga because a German team will definitely go out. But the same also applies to the match between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid. That's the way it’s set up. I think the new Champions League format is good and I've really enjoyed it so far. In the league phase there was always one game home or away against each opponent where you have to be fully committed.

Tah und Co.

You've now gone six games without defeat against Bayern. How do see the fixture going now?

Tah: I think both teams are absolutely at the same level and I believe the two best German teams with the best, most attractive and most successful football now face each other. That's exactly why there will be two special games. We are very much looking forward to both matches.

The support can make the difference in the endJonathan Tah

The away section for the first leg in Munich has obviously been sold out for a long time and the tickets for the return match at home a week later were sold out straightaway. How important is the support of our fans in these two games?

Tah: Extremely important, of course. It can really help us players when you feel the fans are really into the game. The atmosphere at the BayArena at home games has been brilliant recently. And also away from home it’s always a great feeling because you know that we have our tight circle and always stick together. Exactly that support can make the difference in the end in games like this. So my appeal to all fans: Carry on exactly as you are! We are grateful for your support.

Werkself Review #M05B04: Strange start, positive ending

They had their hands full in the VAR centre in Cologne: eight goals were scored at the MEWA Arena on Saturday afternoon, but only four of them were allowed in the end as the Werkself and 1. FSV Mainz 05 closed the season with a 2-2 draw. It means Bayer 04 end the 2024/25 campaign as runners-up with 69 points, representing the fourth-best season in the club's history. What's more, the Werkself are now unbeaten away from home in two whole Bundesliga seasons, with their last away defeat coming exactly two years ago on Matchday 34 of the 2022/23 season at VfL Bochum. The Black-and-Reds can continue the record run next season - albeit without Alonso and Tah. Read what else the eventful final game for the head coach and the defensive leader had to offer in the Werkself Review.

Bayer 04’s final game of the 2024/25 Bundesliga season saw VAR drama and produced a new record for away results with a 2-2 draw in Mainz. The hosts had several goals ruled out before Paul Nebel put them ahead. Patrik Schick’s brace then turned things around in the second half before Jonathan Burkardt’s penalty levelled the game again.
