Matchday news: Take cup momentum into Stuttgart home game

Fans at the BayArena got to enjoy a spectacle on Wednesday as the Werkself came from behind to beat Nürnberg 5-2 in the DFB Pokal. Now with the sixth home game of the season, can Bayer 04 maintain their perfect record in Leverkusen as VfB Stuttgart come to town in the Bundesliga on Saturday (15:30 CET)? The visitors have had issues domestically this term, sitting in 15th place, although they have had much better results in the UEFA Champions League. #B04VFB: Match facts

Bayer 04 fans won’t have fond memories of the last time Stuttgart came to the BayArena, having seen their team trail 4-0 inside the first half. Alejandro Grimaldo then got a scant consolation goal. It means the Werkself have a score to settle and the desire to get back to old ways, having gone 15 competitive meetings unbeaten against Stuttgart prior to last season.

The creativity of Ibrahim Maza could help there. The 20-year-old wasn’t just impressive in the midweek cup game but has been making his mark throughout the Bundesliga campaign, having had 22 shots on goal and set up a further 17. Only Bayern Munich duo Harry Kane and Michael Olise have been involved in more attempts across the division. The Algeria international got a goal and an assist for the first time in a single Bundesliga game in the recent home victory over Freiburg.

Ibrahim Maza’s skills on the ball allowed him to get past several Freiburg defenders and set up Patrik Schick’s winning goal.

Focus on Stuttgart

Stuttgart need a result in Leverkusen, having claimed only six points from the first seven Bundesliga games to sit just one place above the bottom three. Forwards Deniz Undav, Dzenan Pejcinovic and Jamie Leweling are all yet to register a league goal this season, although VfB remain unbeaten in their three Champions League outings. Werkself review: ‘We never lost our belief’

Once the final whistle was blown, it was time to take a deep breath. 2-0 down and a 5–2 win in the end. It was a nerve-wracking affair against FC Nürnberg in the second round of the 2026–27 DFB Pokal. Jonas Hofmann said – “We didn’t let our heads drop” – hitting the nail on the head. Indeed, it was clear the Werkself were not prepared to accept elimination from the DFB Pokal. So they went on to score. The Black and Reds made their presence felt with a goal just before half-time, followed by four more in the second half. Or, to put it another way: Edmond Tapsoba’s first Bayer 04 brace, a clinical penalty from Patrik Schick, yet another precision strike from Hofmann and a blistering volley from Lucas Vázquez. Each goal more beautiful than the last! After the match, head coach Carles Martínez praised his team’s commitment above all else and the fact that they never lost belief in themselves. The Werkself review.
