Matchday news: Strong form and on a roll

#TSGB04: MATCH FACTS

Fourth in the Bundesliga, top of the form guide – Bayer 04 have picked up 13 out of a possible 15 points in the top flight since matchday 2, more than any other team. The key to their success: clinical attacking. Thanks to the skilful footwork of the wingers and full-backs, the Werkself have delivered the most crosses in the league (112), which have resulted in Patrik Schick scoring six goals making him joint top scorer alongside Werder Bremen’s Niclas Füllkrug.

With his goal against SC Freiburg (2-1), Schick set a new club record by scoring in each of the first six matches in a season – and now he wants more. Scoring in seven consecutive Bundesliga fixtures is a feat that, at Bayer 04, only previously achieved by Stefan Kießling. However, as an “unselfish leader” – as head coach Carles Martínez described the Czech after the Freiburg game – the striker always puts the team winning first. And a victory against TSG would be most welcome, given that the Werkself failed to pick up any points against Hoffenheim last season.

For their part, TSG have come away empty-handed from four of their six Bundesliga matches so far. Recently, however, the Blue and Whites have also shown an improvement in form: Their 2–1 win at Borussia Mönchengladbach – Hoffenheim’s second victory of the season – was followed midweek by a commanding 3–0 victory in the UEFA Europa League against Lyon. Key players Andrej Kramaric and Oliver Baumann, in particular, have recently been in fine form for TSG, who are strong both in open play and on the counter-attack. The lowdown on our next opponents.

Werkself Radio from 15:15 CET

With Niko Hartmann absent due to illness, Florian Bechholz will be commentating on the Werkself’s match against TSG Hoffenheim on his own on Werkself Radio. The broadcast will therefore not start until 15:15, and at half-time there will be some music for Bayer 04 fans to enjoy.
