The Werkself have rarely dropped points against Mainz 05: In the last 17 Bundesliga encounters with M05, the Black and Reds have lost just two and have been unbeaten for around three and a half years. Mainz, however, are currently in top form and have made their best start to a season in four years. At the same time, the side led by coach Urs Fischer have failed to win any of their last five matches at home.
Meanwhile, Bayer 04 have managed to win three matches in a row for the first time since the start of the year. A key factor in this could be the formidable duo of Miguel Gutiérrez and Patrik Schick: The Spaniard is among the top assist providers in the Bundesliga with three assists, while the Czech striker could draw level with Stefan Kießling and Dimitar Berbatov and, for the first time, score on each of the first five matchdays of a season.

Mainz 05 also have a duo in top form in their ranks. Six of the ten Mainz goals so far this term – a new club record after four matchdays – have been scored by Phillip Tietz (4) and Sheraldo Becker (2). While the latter repeatedly uses his pace to find space behind the back line, Tietz provides a physical presence and a threat from headers up front. The ‘05ers’ have also impressed so far with strong mentality and high energy levels, both with and without the ball. This has been particularly evident away from home, however – in front of their home crowd, the Rheinhessen side have picked up just one point from their two matches. The lowdown on our next opponents.
The match will also be shown on free-to-air TV in Germany; thanks to a licence from Sky Sport, the fixture will also be broadcast on RTL and can be streamed on RTL+. The broadcast begins at 15:00 CEST. Anyone who prefers to hear familiar voices should definitely tune in to Werkself Radio: commentator Niko Hartmann will be joined by former Bayer 04 player and 1988 UEFA Cup winner Falko Götz.
