It was a successful international break for Bayer 04. Several Werkself players qualified with their national teams for Euro 2024 in Germany or successfully completed their first World Cup qualifiers. Robert Andrich (Germany), Alejandro Grimaldo (Spain) and Nathan Tella (Nigeria) were the three Werkself players to make their international debuts. Granit Xhaka became the most capped player for Switzerland on making his 119th international appearance.
The Werkself focus now returns to the Bundesliga. Alonso started preparations for the match against Werder Bremen at the start of the week with several players from Leverkusen youth teams involved plus the Werkself players who remained behind in Leverkusen.
The number of players at training has increased over the past few days with the gradual return of players. Alonso welcomed the last of his squad to return from international duty back to the training ground on Thursday afternoon.
Bayer 04 will head off to Bremen on Friday 24 November after the final pre-match training session. The clash with the team twelfth in the table is the penultimate Bundesliga away game for Bayer 04 in this calendar year. The Werkself have five home games across all competitions in December.
Bayer 04 are through to the second round of the DFB Pokal after a 4-0 win at Sonnenhof Großaspach on Friday night. The game was paused after only 18 minutes due to a storm over the ground. After a lengthy delay, play resumed and Patrik Schick opened the scoring. Arthur, Christian Kofane and Alejandro Grimaldo made things more comfortable in the second half, as the fourth-tier side had two players sent off.
