The former sporting director and sporting managing director at Bayer 04 Leverkusen retired from operational management this summer and is now a member of the Werkself shareholders committee and also an ambassador for the club.
Völler joined Leverkusen as a player in 1994 and he retired from the game here two years later. He then moved into management at Bayer 04. Völler played 90 times for Germany and he won the World Cup in 1990. He coached Germany from 2000 to 2004 and was a World Cup runner-up with the team in 2002.
Rudi Völler began his playing career at Kickers Offenbach in 1977 and went on to play for 1860 Munich, Werder Bremen, AS Roma and Olympique Marseille. He won the Champions League with the French club in 1993.

His loss has left Bayer 04 deeply saddened: Dieter Herzog, World Cup winner in 1974 and seven years playing for Bayer 04, passed away this week at the age of 79.
