The award, conferred by the German Football League (DFL), will be presented at a meeting of all ground staff at the beginning of September. This is Bayer 04's fourth ‘Pitch of the Year’ award in the Bundesliga.
The prize for outstanding pitch quality in the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 has been awarded since the 2013/14 season. The choice is traditionally based on the team captains' and referees' assessment of the condition of the pitch throughout the season, as well as on various measurements taken by a panel of experts and the stadium ground staff's own inspection.
The pitch at Leverkusen's Ulrich Haberland Stadium is also regularly the benchmark in the women's Bundesliga: last year, the German Football Association (DFB) presented Bayer 04 with the ‘Pitch of the Year’ award for the fifth time in a row. The winner of the recently concluded season has not yet been announced.

Two new signings made their debuts for Bayer 04 on Wednesday in a 60-minute friendly against FC Viktoria Köln: The match against the neighbouring third division club during the first international break of the season marked the debuts of Lucas Vázquez and Ezequiel Fernández.
