The Spanish coach led the team to sixth place in the Bundesliga last term and thereby secured qualification for Europe – a very positive conclusion after an unsuccessful start to the season. On the international stage in the UEFA Europa League, that ended at the semi-final stage against AS Roma, Alonso's Werkself and the fans grew even closer together not least through battling performances by the team.
This summer gave the coach the opportunity for the first time to work more intensively with the team over a long period without games. That the Werkself had moved to the net level in the pre-season under the 41-year-old has been reflected in the Bundesliga table: 16 points after six matches – a club record.
The summary of progress so far: Xabi Alonso has achieved a lot in his first 365 days at Bayer 04. Nevertheless, it is clear every day that the Spaniard is not just satisfied with what's been achieved to date in spite of all the proclamations of success.
Fernando Carro, Bayer 04 CEO: "Xabi's commanding manner and his meticulous work have done us good and provided a very enjoyable development. At the same time, he is able to work under very professional conditions here with us with an outstanding team and further improve his profile as a coach – a win-win situation for both sides."
Simon Rolfes, Bayer 04 sporting managing director: "Xabi has an in-depth understanding of football that receives a positive response from a team like ours. His ambition and sporting aspirations fit in 100% with Bayer 04 Leverkusen."
