Alonso ahead of #B04FCB: ‘Play with maturity and emotional control'

Three days after the 2-0 win at Ferencváros in the second leg of the Europa League Round of 16 tie, the Werkself now return to league action. This Sunday, 19 March (kick-off: 17.30 CET/stadium opens: 15.30 CET), the current league leaders Bayern Munich visit the BayArena. For the clash with the record champions on Bundesliga matchday 25, the prime desire is "to carry forward and use the momentum from the last matches," as head coach Xabi Alonso stressed at the pre-match press conference on Friday morning held at the team hotel in Budapest.

After the late evening game, progress to the Europa League quarter-finals and a short night, Xabi Alonso turned his attention to the next challenge on Friday morning: "We know it's always difficult against Bayern. They have incredibly high quality on the pitch week after week and face their opponents with intensive play at the highest level."

REUNION with old friends

The Spaniard, who played for FC Bayern for three years and won the German league title three times with the club, is looking forward to the reunion: "I had a lot of great times at FC Bayern and have great connections there. I'm looking forward to talking with some people after the final whistle. But before that my focus is completely on the match and I see that professionally so there is no time to be emotional. Above all else, I want to help my team."

The aim against the record champions, after two away games, is to build on the performances and results from the last games in front of a full house at the BayArena. Alonso continued: "We are in a good phase as a team at the moment and that gives us confidence. We will do our best in spite of the short preparation time and produce the best possible performance on the pitch."

That requires above all, "maturity and emotional control," said the Spaniard who has won five of the last six games with the Werkself. "We had all of that in the last games. If we can bring that quality onto the pitch then we will be successful."

Amiri on road to recovery

In relation to the squad for the match against FC Bayern, the 41 year-old coach responded to a question at the press conference by saying he was unable to give a final assessment: "It's too early to say exactly who we can include in our plans for on Sunday. Karim (Bellarabi, ed.) was ill and with Patrik (Schick, ed.) we'll have to wait and see how his groin problem develops. Nadiem (Amiri, ed.) is on the road to recovery after his muscular problems.”

Werkself BACK in Leverkusen

The Werkself landed safely at Cologne/Bonn airport on Friday afternoon and are now back in the Rhineland. Alonso will hold a final pre-match training session on Saturday 18 March. After Sunday’s game, there will be a quieter time for Lukas Hradecky and Co. Alonso finished off by saying: "At the moment, we just take everything day by day. After the game against FC Bayern we’ll have more time for recovery and then again be best prepared and fit for the forthcoming matches."

Werkself move up to fourth place after 4-1 win against RB Leipzig

Bayer 04 put in a brilliant performance to beat RB Leipzig 4-1 on Bundesliga matchday 32 and are now fourth in a Champions League spot. The Black and Reds took control of the game right from the start and, with 75 per cent possession at one stage, took a 2-0 lead into the break through Patrik Schick (25’) and Nathan Tella (45+1’). The visitors initially tried to do more after the break, but the Werkself remained determined and Schick scored his second goal to increase the lead to 3-0 (76'). The Red Bulls pulled a goal back through Christoph Baumgartner (80'), but the disciplined Leverkusen side were not rattled - and certainly not Schick: The Czechia international crowned a brilliant display with his third goal shortly before the final whistle to make the final score 4-1.

Matchday news #B04RBL: All in red for the next top match win

In the previous game against RB Leipzig in December last year, the Werkself turned came from behind to win 3-1 and further improved Leverkusen's already strong record against the Red Bulls. Montrell Culbreath stood out with his first goal on his debut for the Black and Reds. While the 18-year-old would certainly like to score a second goal against Leipzig on Saturday night, the attack-minded visitors come to the BayArena in confident mood after five Bundesliga victories in a row. The Nordkurve12 supporters group knows the Werkself will therefore once again be reliant on the vociferous support of the fans, and has once again called for the ‘Finally Red’ campaign in the run-in.
