Bundesliga Women: Newcomers Bremen follow Eintracht

The third match in seven days: After games against VfL Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt, the Bayer 04 Women’s team play Werder Bremen on Sunday 11 October (kick-off: 14.00 CEST). Head coach Achim Feifel has sounded a warning about the pointless but rested newly promoted side.

After Wednesday night’s high-intensity clash in Frankfurt (2-2), the 56-year-old put the speedy recovery of his players centre stage. “We have to have the necessary freshness against Bremen,” Feifel said. The reason: Werder did not play during the week and are therefore likely to be more rested than the Black and Reds ahead of the game in Leverkusen.

In any case, the Green and Whites are better than their position in the league table suggests despite having no points and a goal difference of three for and 15 against after four games in the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga. “We’ll have to work hard on everything again. Nothing happens on its own in this league,” added Feifel.

Brüggemann may return

The skipper Jessica Wich returned to action after an injury lay-off in the draw at Frankfurt, playing a key role in midfield up to her substitution on the hour mark. Her vice-captain Nina Brüggemann missed the game against Eintracht but is also well on the way to recovery. “We’re waiting for the last training sessions ahead of the game to decide whether she’s an option for Sunday,” said Feifel. A win against the Green and Whites would put the Werkself Women on ten points after six games.

Matchday news #B04FCSP: DFB Pokal quarter-final against battling St. Pauli

As in the past two years, the Werkself are aiming to come out on top in the DFB Pokal quarter-finals on Tuesday night, 3 February (kick-off: 20:45 CET). With eleven home games in a row without defeat against the Kiezkicker, the Black and Reds go into the floodlit match in confident mood. But the Pokal, as is often said, has its own magic and the team from the Millerntor has much more to offer than the current 17th place in the Bundesliga would suggest. After all, Bayer 04 are one of the big German teams the combative Hamburgers have already made life difficult for this season. The matchday news.
